    Salt substitute

Can anyone tell me the following please:

Best salt substitute (for cooking etc) NOT low salt, where to purchase in bulk (not 250g etc) sizes.

Have just spent £18 for 6 X 250g bags which I find a bit of a rip off.

It is slightly cheaper but am really looking to buy in kilo bags like you do with normal salt, saves having to buy many small tubs/boxes.

out of curiosity why do you want to go with salt alternative/substitute?

It is for a family member. They have been told by consultant that if they do not remove salt totally from their diet then within 3 years or so they will kidney failure.

    yes removing not replacing.
salt substitutes contain high concentrations of potassium chloride. potassium can be worse for the kidneys than salt/sodium.

there is absolutely no need to add salt to food. after couple of weeks you wont even notice its not there (the taste will adjust, for the better might I say).
try other spices like pepper, herbs, paprika.
people add salt during cooking and on the table (hence why most overconsume salt).

Now, because I dont know anymore about your relative I cannot say anymore. however, kidney disease is also associated with diabetes, obesity, heart disease. if that is the case try tackling those to some degree. best way is to exercise and weight loss (5% minimum).

I would suggest going to the consultant/gp requesting more detail (that you are able to understand) and asking to be referred to dietitian if its necessary (not a nutritionists or some kind of a quack, nor googling diet and kidneys because this is a medical condition affecting life that needs to be managed by qualified person).

    Thank you for your post.

The family member has a whole host of other medical problems, some of which you have listed. I did read that Postassium is just as bad or even worse as you have stated.

Exercise is virtually impossible due to Osteoarthiritis.

Most people can get away without adding salt to food even when cooking, it does take time though to get used to it but once you do there is no going back. Might be worth giving it a try.

no problem. hope it will help.

BTW> by exercise I did not mean going to the gym or running for 2 hrs. by exercise I mean physical activity above the usual life activities. However, some weight baring exercises do help with OA and OA related pain
also if your relative suffers from OA perhaps something like swimming might do the job?

People don't realise this but exercise is literally cure/prevention of majority of chronic conditions. Anyone who will invent exercise in the pill not only will become richest person in the wold (instantly) but also will put majority of the pharmaceutical companies into bankruptcy

Unfortunately family member cannot even walk 10 metres without pain and rest....they do do the majority to household tasks themselves just to keep active.
