galaxy wins hands down for hardware, as for the looks i personally think the desire has it there, but if i was to get one, the galaxy.

No flash on the Galaxy so that depands if you take alot of pics in the dark

I owned a desire for 3 weeks before getting it replaced by a Galaxy S. There is no contest, the Galaxy S wins hands down. 3 People I work with have just bought a Galaxy after seeing mine.... and the 2 monkeys with Desires that persuaded me to get what they had are now both selling their Desires to buy a Galaxy.

The Galaxy is classier to hold as well.

I've said it once before and I'll say it again - Galaxy S for hardware, Desire for UI (and I really don't like the Galaxy UI) I think that you can't enjoy a phone even if it has the best hardware if it has a terrible UI - like having a core i7 computer running windows 95.

I couldn't disagree more. I absolutely love the GUI on the Galaxy S and didnt like it on the Desire! What didnt you like about it? Its as smooth as a babys bum IMHO.

You're not gonna go far wrong whichever you choose.

    Galaxy S versus HTC Desire

Most people (I said most, guv) have onlyhad one so they can't offer a balanced opinion. Read reviews and comparisons, there are tons of them, then make up your own mind.

It's proper trying to be an iphone, don't like the swipe left and right on the main applications menu and the 4 applications at the bottom, I mean CMON! Also the Desire pre installed widgets are great while the Galaxy S's aren't as good.

I've only had a couple of minutes with a Galaxy S though, so maybe I would appreciate it more if I had a week or a month with it.

Testfreaks gave the Bold 9700 a 9.9, I wouldn't trust them as a serious reviewer.

One advantage the Sammy had is that Swype input, but I've downloaded SlideIT today and it works great. Have you tried it?

I agree when in Apps mode, it does look and feel like an iPhone - but better! The only area I'd agree the Desire wins is as was pointed out, lack of LED Flash on the camera. That may be a problem for some, but I use a proper camera for photos, so not a issue to me.

For graphics capabilities, take a look at this...

But for me the things that swing it are:

The screen. Nothing comes close to the Galaxy... and I hate not being able to see the screen outside, which is the case with the Desire.

I thought that Browsing on an iPhone was hard to beat, but the Galaxy does it. The Keyboard is nicer and scrolling up and down a long webpage is absolutely smooth.

I can access and stream from my home server any film or music. (standard app) and similarly can run as a server!

It comes with 16GB - plus a further 32GB can be added.

I liked the look of the Galaxy as soon as I got it, but it's only since I've had a long play with it, that I appreciate just how good it is.

Theres no doubt in my mind whatsoever that the hardware in the Galaxy S wipes the floor with almost ALL competition in the phone market - even against the galaxy which uses the 1ghz snapdragon, the 1ghz hummingbird beats it for gaming.

I know that people have complained about the screen being hard to see in sun light, but i really doesn't bother me too much, it is possible to see the screen when in the sun when the brightness is at its highest, and anyway, how many times in the year does the UK get beautiful sunshine? The Super AMOLED is newer technology so it will beat standard AMOLED, plus Samsung are keeping the technology to themselves (damn them!). The Desire apparently is moving from AMOLED to SLCD due to AMOLED shortages so maybe that could be viewable better outside

I can't really knock the Desire for internet viewing - its the perfect size (for me) to see the website fully and without problems, plus I love the reflow system (I can't remember if the Galaxy S did this as well, but it is really great). I can understand the extra 0.3 inch working well for internet viewing though.

I know you can access streaming with the Desire (can't remember how but I know it can), but I don't have a use for it as I dont have a server in my home.

Having your phone running as a server? Wow, now THAT is impressive.

Again a very good idea, wish my Desire had more built in memory

I suppose it's the same with all *good* phones nowadays, you really start to appreciate a phone after a few months of owning it, let me tell you, after owning this Desire I don't think I'll ever want another non-Android phone again!

thank you guys for the useful information...but still can't decide..im thinking more towards the galaxy S tho...

Would be cool if HTC could have brought the Evo to the UK, that phone seriously kicks ass spec-wise.

desire is nice with the HTC interface (it's lush)

galaxy has better HW my brother in law had the desire and now has the galaxy S and he said her prefers the screen on the galaxy S.

I have the dell streak and he loves it (i love it too) but the physical size of the phone put him off a little (i want it especially because it has a large screen as i read RSS feeds on it and browse the web.

what kinds of things do you want to do with the phone? it may help make a decision. if it's just general requirements I think you should go for the galaxy S if money is an issue i'd go for the desire (assuming it's cheaper as its older)

if you want a large screen and all the goodies too then check out a dell streak in person at an o2 store.

horses for courses as they say.

The desire and galaxy s are both good I've owned both on t mobile. Now have the galaxy s! On top of what people have said the galaxy s has also better wifi connectivity with wireless b g and n connections unlike the older desire!

Yeah we are so technologically behind so many countries, like in internet speeds for example.
Bit of a shame really, we should have better than this.

They both seem fairly even. I'm not a big fan of Samsung in general so I'd go in favour of HTC but it will probably come down to which you like the feel of more so go have a play in the shops.

The galaxy S, will meet the specs for google android 3.0. If rumours are to be true. 4" screen, 1ghz processor, and 512mb ram. It will apparently have its own UI.

I'm already running 2.2, and its fine. It's just in beta, nothing official though.

Surely so would Desire. Desire has 64mb more ram too!

Screen size shouldn't be a requirement, given the resolution is identical on both phones.

    Galaxy S imho.

I have the same dilemma. Think I am swaying towards the Desire though.
