Samsung X05 laptop won't connect to the internet...heeelp!

    Hi all

I have borrowed a laptop from work and it won't connect to the internet. The wifi is on and it can see the Netgear router, but when I try to connect it won't let me. When I click the diagnostic thing it says there is a problem with the router, but there isn't as the NC10 that I am typing this on is working fine!

Can anyone offer me any pearls of wisdom?

    Cheers

is the password correct? to many wireless connections? is the router wireless b/g/n compatible with the laptop just some ideas

Have you set the encryption key on the laptop to the one set in the router ?

The router and the Lappy are 802.11b. There are enough connections. The password is right. Would uninstalling the driver and then letting it re-configure do any good?

    How do i do that?

what about wep oe wpa settings? or maybe turning the wireless on the laptop off and then on again

Have you checked the IP address on the laptop? If it's from work it's probably set up for a different network.

If you use your browser and log into your router, under Wireless settings - security it tells you the encryption that the router is set at.
You would then set the laptop to the same.

You could try turning off encryption in the router and then see if you can connect.

You may be onto something. How do I check both addresses and ensure they are the right ones?

Do you have a PC (or other laptop) connected to the router? If so then you need to mimic the PC's settings, otherwise it's a bit hit & miss. These instructions tell you how to get to the IP address settings; compare your PC with the laptop & change the laptop as necessary:

Click on 'Start', right-click on 'Network' or 'My Network Places' (it's called different things depending on which flavour of Windows you are using), then select 'Properties'. This should get you to a window called "Network Connections".

Right-click on the connection icon & select 'Properties', then scroll to the bottom of the window & highlight 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP'.

Click on the 'Properties' button just under the window.

Change the details on the laptop to match those on the PC.

If you don't have another machine to check against, then under the 'General' tab, has 'Obtain an IP address automatically' been selected? If not, select it, come back out of the menus/screens you've opened, reboot the laptop & see if it's now working.

Let us know how you get on...

They were both on auto IP addresses so its not that!

In which case, either there is an encryption key that needs setting on the laptop, or the wifi needs enabling (with some laptops having the wifi turned on isn't enough, you also have to enable it).
