Santa Fe vs X-Trail

Hi, I'm looking at upgrading my car and am drawn between a Hyundai Santa Fe and the Nissan X-Trail and have a budget of £23,000.

Looks wise I prefer the Santa Fe and the 2.2l engine (Diesel) seems a better option on paper over the 1.6l X-Trail (I know there is a new 2l X-Trail but not in budget). However, for the budget I can get a higher spec and younger Nissan that I can Hyundai.

My questions are, does anyone have any experience of both vehicles and performance wise how did they compare? Those with the X-trail, how does the 1.6 Diesel engine handle four passengers and luggage - is it powerful enough to regularly transport a full car without loss of power?

Thanks in advance.

seems very strange but up untill last night driving home from work I was all set to get a Santa Fe when I saw a seven seat x trail and thought I would need to look into one of them......I know it doesn't help much but I'm intrigued to read others answers

I think both are nice cars but I would read into diesel engines I don't think they have a future. I suspect the government will start taxing these toxic vehicles in the next 3 years. If I was spending that kind of money j would go for a petrol/hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander plugin hybrid. You can pick them up ex demonstrator or private almost new for the same money. YMMV

I did briefly consider the Outlander but ruled it out due to the relatively new technology and the likely maintenance costs. The Government also needs to give a firmer commitment to supporting the technology, until that happens people will continue to choose either petrol or diesel.

Personal I would have the Nissan over the hyundai. The santa fe does have better performance but not the fuel economy. The Nissan is the more comfortable. The Nissans 130 bhp has the power to pull a full load n a loaded trailer on the back without putting to much strain on the engine. The hyundai to me was out done by the Nissan in everything but the bhp. But if u do buy the Nissan don't go for the fwd as the 4wd is far better especially if ur going to be fully loaded. I've had both of them for 6 months at a time. At the min I've the Renault kadjar but would like to get the X trail again

Thanks for your thoughts what mpg were you getting, if you don't mind me asking on the X-Trail? I prefer the shape of the Santa Fe but the X-Trail is better value for money. Just didn't want to spend the money on the X-Trail to find that the engine struggled under load as that would really wind me up over time and create serious buyer remorse

Running around I was getting abt 48 mpg and when fully loaded with caravan on bk I was getting in the 35/37 mpg. With the santa fe I was only getting 35 on day to day n 22-25 loaded. I loved the looks of the santa fe but til me the x trail out performed it in nearly every way.

Thank you

I have a 15 plate qashqai, i'd go for the honda instead

I would buy the Mitsubishi mentioned above, as a Mitsi owner (different model) I have been very impressed with the reliability.

Of the two OP choices, the X Trail looks too agricultural to me, but the clincher would be the fact Nissan now parts share with Renault; and Renault have a terrible reputation for reliability.
(Ditto some Volvos, if a Volvo breaks down, 90% of the time it is a Renault part that has failed).

Wouldn't recommend the Santa Fe

Is there a particular reason for not recommending it?

Have a look at the Mazda CX-5 2.2d.
We have the same engine in our Mazda 6. Not the most powerful in class but effortless on long runs.

The one we bought from new was a lemon right from the start. Everything that could have gone wrong, did. The garage did all the repairs, but got rid of it in the end.
