Sat nav ,

    i hope some1 can help , iam and looking to buy a sat nav ,to use not only here (uk ) but in canada ,ive heard tom tom and Garmin are the best type ,so i wondered if any1 has seen any good deals around ,or can offer me a bit ov advice as to which one to buy

    With older models, there could be a problem if your car has a heat reflective windscreen (Often fitted as part of an air con package). The heat reflective player is a thin metal coating, which can block enough GPS signal so that the unit won't work. Sometimes it takes a heavy rainstorm to tip the signal "over the edge". Modern units are more sentitive, but it's a thing to be aware of. If you are affected suddenly, e.g., while driving in heavy rain, you may be able to work around the problem by moving the unit to a position up near the rear view mirror. There may be a clear area in the coating there, so that things like electronic toll passes can work.

    Apart from usability (and I remember struggling with a Sony Sat Nav a while back - horrible), the only thing I can think of is a warning if there is any chance you'll expect to use your GPS on the Channel Islands (nice place for a holiday) or the Isle of Man (ditto). Despite any claim to provide complete coverage of the UK, check the mapping in the models you're interested in before you buy. According to TeleAtlas, as used in lots of models, including several TomToms, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man simply don't exist! Just try to find, say, 42 Fountain Street, St Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands, GY1 1DA.

    I have an elderly Garmin Streepilot 510, which is based on Navteq maps (Like most Garmin products). It's superb and I would quite happily buy another Garmin product.
