    Sat Navs and Bluetooth

Am completely confused (as ever) but was going to get a TomTom One Europe as a present but see it doesn't have bluetooth. Is the bluetooth part necessary in your opinion?

    HI,

From memory all the TomTom GPS units have Internal GPS so for Routing there is no need for the Bluetooth. Usually the Blutooth lets you pair your Mobile Phone for Saft Hands free operation..

    Hope this helps.

I have both a TomTom and a Garmin.

I like using the Garmin better than the Tom Tom but bought the Tom Tom in USA as maps for USA Garmin too expensive here and buying Tom Tom cheaper option. Anyway, they both have bluetooth but Tom Tom only for connecting to mobile phone for updating and Garmin bloetooth is used for 'hands free' telephone calls. Probably you can get a Tom Tom version with 'hands free' too.

If your car doesn't have bluetooth hands free this facility is brilliant. On the Garmin the volume, quality of sound is excellent but the drawback is availability and cost of map updates. Tom Tom on the other hand always have deals offering updates at a very competitive price plus easy to get. I took my Garmin to USA and tried everywhere to get maps for USA and couldn't but was able to buy Tom Tom online with Comp USA with a $50 online discount for equivalent of £99 which was cheaper than hiring one.

    Hope this helps.

    Brilliant, thanks for the info.

I have a feeling the bluetooth can also be used for traffic too? Warns you of problems ahead and can re-route. I may be wrong though.

You're right and I also think that if you have friends with the same system it will tell them and you where you each are. Forgot about it as I don't use it. The Garmin can come with a built in FM receiver which give updates to road conditions, accidents etc. Mine has an external attachment for this.
