    School dinners - healthy eating

    Banned
As the government and people like Jamie Oliver become more obsessed with healthy eating, more and more measures are being taken to force healthy eating upon children.

At my elderly sons school, they have removed all vending machines. There are no fizzy drinks sold. No chips, no chocolate, no sweets, no crisps, no burgers etc..

People are not allowed to go to the shop across the road before school and any choc bought in from there gets confiscated...

At my younger sons school, they monitor lunchboxes, and confiscate unhealthy items..

I think it is a disgrace how other people think they can decide what our kids eat. What happened to freedom of choice? People should be allowed to eat what they want and not have their diets decided by other people - apart from maybe their parents....rant over!

Diet plays a massive role in health, so getting children to eat healthily now will mean they are likely to carry on eating healthily in their adult lives.

It can also affect behaviour as well, having disruptive kids in class isn't good for anyone.

Saying this I don't believe confiscating all unhealthy foods is the right thing to do. As long as they don't make up a large protportion of the diet .

Its a good thing I think, its obviously that alot of parents don't care what there children eat, I only wish they had this when I was back at school, I would be 100% better off for it.

Well I think its more freedom of choice its good to encourage kids to eat healthily but to ban certain foods and such takes away that, and a naughty snack here and there isnt too bad

my little guy has a very healthy school meal, also so do the juniours, there is no frozen or processed food anymore, untill of vcourse you hit seniour school where all they serve in the hot canteen, is pizza and chips, thankfully they also do a salad and pasta bar, but as for hot meals they are disgusting

pizza and chips etc are no longer served in my sons secondary canteen, they now get the likes of panini's etc  - great i say but they are not cheap :-(

Our local schools offer a great menu each day comprising of alot of organic produce.

The parents that moan about school dinners are usually the ones who feed their kids rubbish at home and the kids that moan can blame their parents for not giving them a decent diet at home.

Oh ! I agree that healty is the way my point is the way its handled, education & information MUST be the way. That means the parents to, and no my kids, if they were 5 - 7 would not get muky d, thankfully they is all growed up and happy.

So maybe the schools should advise rather than dictate.

Or we couldd jus ban Mc D !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

to resolve this there should be certain days of the week where unhealthier foods are allowed such as chips etc. As if the kids arent allowed them at school when they are out of school they may go mad and buy as much junk food as possible
