School Restriction Settings...

We've just moved into a new school, and the internet is restricted like heck, Facebook isn't blocked, yet some wikipedia sites are, and hotmail is... netsweeper is the client, how do I get round this?

If facebook isn't blocked i doubt most proxies would either?

ask your system admin to kindly unblock them for you.....simples or are you a system admin?

Why do you need to get round it? Wiki is no loss either!!

You're at school to learn, not look at stuff you're not supposed to look at. Do some work

They won't unblock it, and any proxies are blocked, I need a newly setup one with an obscure name...

Hi
DD has just pleasantly informed me its the same at her school too. Apparently the kids have found a way round this, by finding alternate search engines (which strangely seems to work)
Try these:
Goatsmile.co.uk/com
Knifepoodle.co.uk/com (not sure if com or uk)
May be different for you though

This was one of the most annoying things when I was working in school, children sitting on games and facebook because they found ways around it. I thought kids went to school to learn, not play games, guess I am wrong.

EDIT: not saying your going to sit on games, but that was what generally happened where I was.

lol at the kids knowing more than the network admins

Yep, It's just why let facebook, but block hotmail :S?

Same at our school - there are loads and loads of proxy addresses, try and you will find one that will work. coppertrunk.com ok for now at our spot.

dont go searching for Lesbians as some people in my year when I was back at school got suspended for it lol

Anyway you should be studying and learning out of books and not wikipedia which anyone can edit or on facebook!

Yes, but if like at our school, the systems 'learn' the proxies that kids use and they get automatically blocked too.

Most schools will have kids agree to a 'Usage Policy' and proxies are usually against the normal usage stuff, so if you want to try and avoid the security put in place, expect a loss of access in full.

Neopets was this in thing when I was at school, do kids still go on it? oh and 3d pool haha

RM tutor 5 - set up Internet restrictions - Job done!!

I think the kids should be glad to have internet at school, I left college in 2001 and even then we didn't have it, had to make do with a 5 1/4" floppy drive. Made it slightly worse was I was doing an IT course and we were learning Windows 3.1...

I also left college in 2001, In my A'Level computing we learned how to write Pascal and how dot matrix printers work

I would love it!, had a similar system when i was teaching at college with my level 1 btec classes.
However now at my secondary we don't have any central system like that! despite being a "Technology College"!

If facebook was unblocked you could pretty much write off every lesson using computers in my school!

LAN school is good for stopping this although some of my students managed to unblock the restrictions I had in place

Unfortunately i have Zero say or power over what we have on the school network! the best we can do is make suggestions.. which we have been doing to no avail!

We managed to get past the restrictions so it's ok for us.

One kid found out that if you start up a game, then pull the ethernet cable out it will continue playing. He got suspended for doing so

haha wow your school is tight too, we get suspended for pressing the lift button/using it or even not being enthusiastic about the new school.

Bloody kids, pain the @rse the lot of you! I'm the head of ICT and Business at my school, so have a bit more of a say, we are trialling a bit of software called Impero at the moment, and on first impression I'd say very good. Does the job in terms of stopping access to swf games, dodgy websites and the like. It even logs keystrokes so is stopping kids trying to be clever and opening up things through Word or Excel.

Sorry kids...

This is what one prat in my class did, corrupted his user area on the network and lostall his course work. I have to admit to feeling quite pleased inside.

Showed those pesky kids whats what.Main limitation of Vision though is it blocks the internet to the PC and not the user, can be pretty annoying if the kid switches Pc, or for the next person if you forget to unblock it.

Just keep puling the ethernet cable in and out to annoy you

We had a really good system in my school, we could block the whole screen and take over the mouse to close windows down, or only allow certain programs to be opened. So if they were only supposed to be working on a project in word, everything else would be blocked, even all the other programs, loved it!!

Just use one of the many free proxy sites on the net.
