Craig Venter and his team have built the genome of a bacterium from scratch and incorporated it into a cell to make what they call the world's first synthetic life form

Scientists have created the world's first synthetic life form in a landmark experiment that paves the way for designer organisms that are built rather than evolve

Hmmmmm. God now made redundant? How long before "Alien" is created?

Agreed.... they are playing with fire. I wonder if the bible needs a new chapter?

what benefit could there be from doing this?

they just said the benefits could be enormous. Fuels were mentioned. Not sure how!

More important than splitting the atom apparently

Most important break through in around 50 years IMO

Allow us to build up organic compounds from the begininning, effectively allowing us to create anything. Can create our own fuels, can create vaccines, can build organs. We can get a cell to do what we want it to do, making the possibilities endless.

thought this was old news. was mentioned on a documentary i was watching a few months back.
they might have been trying to do it back then though.

surely cavemen did that already by rubbing sticks together.

Nah this has just been released. I think you might watched the same programme which mention someone from Harvard trying to create life.

This sounds like the content of a Heston Blumenthal show.

We've been playing god for a long time now, We will cause our own downfall in the end.

The last bit is the worry. Genetic engineering is one thing, this potentially is more serious. Life forms tend to do the unexpected and mutate to suit ITS self. That normally happens over generations..... this will be far quicker.

would have been cool if the bacteria multiplied exponentially and took over the world

How, and why? I don't see how this a fundamental change to anything. Its certainly a breakthough in genetics, but an incremental, expected one, and it certainly isn't as 'game-changing' as some of the discoveries and inventions of the early-to-mid 20th century...

The possibilities sound awesome even if we all do die as a consequence.

Actually it should be much better than the crude cybernetics on show there
