Scrap gold selling / websites, advice please

Found 22nd Jan 2009
I have been reading on here over the past week about people selling scrap / broken gold.
Has anybody had experiences with these sites or used them?
cashforyourgold.co.uk 1g 9ct = £6.60
www.hattongardenmetals 1g 9ct = £6.92
www.gotgoldgetcash 1g 9ct = £4.00 (free Royal Mail postage provided)
gold-traders.co.uk 1g 9ct = £6.62
I have currently managed to find about 40g and was wondering which is a trustworthy site to use?
Any advice would be greatly welcomed.

You say Hattongardens seem to be reliable and trustworthy, have you used them? They do appear to offer the best price.

I didn't say you should avoid them, I'm saying take Monkey Saving Martins tips with a touch of salt. The previous year it was the Icelandic banks.

Looks really fishy to me.

The only reason that they are recommending Hattongardenmetals because they receive a commission from the referrals. MSE make claims that HGM offer the best prices, but I can easily find (and have used a few gold buyers in the past) who pay better rates.

A few years ago, HGM were spamming the forums on UKHOTDEALS & MSE. That's probably how they became so popular.

Anyhow, if you are looking to sell gold online, make sure you sell to a company who at least has a counter service. I wouldn't trust any firm with my gold unless you can pay them a visit (whether you intend to use their postal service or not).

In fact, if you pop into Hatton Garden / the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter, you will find many walk in places who pay better rates.

Strong bump.

Apologies dtovey89, didn't mean to offend you. I'm new to the forum and just saw this post and wanted to give some good advice. Go easy on the newbie.

I've personally used Hatton garden before and can fully recommend them. Offer the most value for money and money is transferred into your account the next day. They will call you first to check that the price they have quoted is ok and if you want they can send it back to you.

Also if you go to their website you can input the weight and they will give you a quote.

No offence taken lol.

It's just a tad strange you browsed to find a post from last year that hadn't been commented on in months lol

I think you missed the point of my original message. But I'm going to explain, then give up.

I am not disputing that HGM give a good service.
I am not disputing that HGM give a good price.

I am however saying that if I spammed MSE, HOTUKDEALS & other forums advertising that I pay the best rates for gold, some people use my service then of course I am going to get in some business and probably a few recommendations too. Furthermore, I am saying to take MSE with a pinch of salt. HGM pay them for the referral. As such, it is not in MSE's interest to promote any other gold buyer.

Why do you think that Which stated that Tesco was the UK's number 1 gold buyer when they are blatantly not? Do you think it could be because of money or a good PR campaign????

With regards to the service you received by HGM, this is to be expected of all online & offline gold companies.

Check out some of these and compare with HGM's prices (16th August 2011)...

hattongardenmetals.com - £12.51 per g 9ct gold, £0.56p per g silver, £28.70 Platinum
rpm-gold.com - £12.57 per g 9ct gold, £0.45p per g silver, £28.17 Platinum
lois-jewellery.com - Website down at the moment, so cannot check prices - but they are very good!
falkosgold.co.uk - £12.45 per g 9ct gold, £0.59p per g silver, £28.79 Platinum
howcashforgold.co.uk - £12.47 per g 9ct gold, £0.55p per g silver, £28.56 Platinum
cooksongold.com - £12.03 per g 9ct gold, £0.56 per g silver, £25.92 Platinum

I have tested ALL these competing firms apart from Howcashforgold.

I can recommend ALL of them, and what's more, they ALL have a counter service (London, Birmingham), ALL can make instant payment, and some even send out a special delivery envelopes... By the way, most just sell their gold on to Cooksons which is why cooksons pay a relatively low gold rate to the public, because it will upset its trade custom.

I hope that this clarifies my position, it just frustrates me when everybody seems to shout HattonGardenMetals in the forums, when the truth is that they started life spamming the forums. The forum members test their services, get pleased with the results and this is the only reason why they are so prominent in the gold buying industry today.
