Secondary school bans girls from wearing skirts

A secondary school has banned girls from wearing skirts, regardless of length, to prevent them from attracting unwanted attention

The head teacher of St Aidan's Church of England High School in Harrogate, North Yorkshire imposed a complete ban on skirts because young girls were "placing themselves at risk" by raising their hemlines.
From the start of the September term, all female pupils up to the age of 15 will have to wear long black trousers.

In a letter to parents at the mixed-sex school, Dennis Richards said that the strict new uniform rules were necessary because young children were "wholly unaware of the signals they are giving out" by wearing short skirts.
He said that earlier attempts to impose a minimum skirt length had led to "battles within the family home and unnecessary and time wasting confrontation at school", making a blanket ban the only effective solution.
The head teacher wrote: "We have been seriously concerned now, for a number of years, that girls as young as 12/13 years of age are placing themselves at risk by wearing skirts of a wholly inappropriate length.
"We are also aware that parents are becoming increasingly frustrated that the school seems incapable of imposing its authority on such young children. In the end we could probably do so but the cost in terms of detentions and exclusions would be very high and disproportionate to the end we would achieve."
In a statement on the school website he added: "Parents who have come in have been astonished to see the difference between the length their daughter may wear her skirt as she leaves home and what has happened by the time she is walking the corridors of the school."
Addressing sceptical parents, Mr Richards said: "The world has moved on. It is bizarre in 2010 to see wearing trousers as 'some form of punishment'."
While Mr Richards claimed to have received supportive messages from parents, the school has been criticised for failing to enforce its previous rules outlawing only shorter skirts.
Margaret Morrissey of the pressure group ParentsOutloud said: "Skirts of a reasonable length have a place in any school uniform.
"If a school can't get its pupils to abide by the rules there is a problem there. It sends out completely the wrong message to children if their misbehaviour leads to a change in the rules."
North Yorkshire County Council, the local authority with responsibility for education, said it did not comment on specific uniform policies.
But a spokeswoman said: "Decisions about school uniform are taken in the best interests of children by school leaders and governing bodies often in consultation with parents."
The skirt ban at St Aidan's covers pupils in Years 7 to 10. As part of the new uniform policy, girls in Year 11, who are aged 15 and 16, will be allowed to wear dark navy skirts so long as they are no more than three inches above the knee.
St Aidan's is a specialist science school with 1,898 pupils. It was praised as "an outstanding school in all respects" by Ofsted in 2006.
Other schools across the country are also tightening their uniform rules for the new academic year; Chipping Camden School in Gloucestershire has students from wearing hoodies, short skirts, denim and crop-tops.

To be honest I can understand this, I often see very young girls with the skirts hitched so far up you can almost see their underwear and as mentioned above I doubt they left home that way. The schools motives seem to be right anyway and its obviously been discussed with parents and doesnt seem like a knee jerk reaction. Just my opinion though ....

    boys wearing skirts?

Oh, so only the church wants some degree of modesty in schools - don't think so!

    hahahaha how times change!!
When I was at school we actually went on strike because the girls were not allowed to wear trousers! (We got on the 10 o/c news too!)

No, but they're the type of people who think repression is the best way to deal with any social problem.

Maybe they could just ship the skirts off to another parish (different church I know but they're all as crazy as each other).

why not, what's wrong with the trousers at the time, heard this on tv yestreday:whistling:

We werent allowed to wear trousers and we used to get told off for rolling our skirts up - They used to check our waist band to make sure it was not rolled up... yet in PE we wore the smallest shortest PE skirts - but because we did PE seperate from the boys it was ok... i dont think so not when we are doing high jump in these tiny skirts and the lads including the boys PE teacher are all stood at the fence watching ...... Schools will never win, i know what they are trying to do but where do you draw the line...

I agree, although the vast majority of girls around here wear trousers to school anyway.

I'm sure that everyone has far better things to do than constantly have to talk to pupils about skirt length.

I do recall in the dim and distant past having to stand under the clock in the main entrance hall for turning my skirt over at the top a few times - above the regulation minimum knee length!! and yes .. the wearing of trousers was banned, plus we had hats, summer dresses, gymslips, reg knickers, blazers and ties. Somehow we survived the oppression!!

If you keep pushing the boundaries then you have to pay the price. Maybe they will think twice before breaking the rules. I back the school.

At my nieces school the majority wear their school shorts under their skirts,my niece included.

I too wasn't allowed to wear trousers when i was at school, but that was many years ago,i'm old!

silly imo, one of the under pinning reasons of school uniform is to prepare pupils for the work place, dressing smartly etc etc, this was well thought out in respect to the lack of jobs there will be when they leave school. So yeah why bother?

I am sure I heard a case a few years ago where boys were banned from wearing certain clothes but girls werent so in protest many boys wore skirts to school and were told they wouldnt be taught.

I am indifferent to this since its just an extra thing girls can wear anyway, wearing trousers isnt the end of the world!

we are entering muslim culture phase......next will be headscarves or hijabs

I think this is a good idea as i'm suprised how short and tight some of the girls wear their skirts! If we wore skirts at school they had to be knee length and you had to wear tights - therefore many opted to wear trousers.

the choices we give up in this country are astounding IMO

Im sorry but anyone who thinks its mental has got a serious problem, we all know that certain people on here are just posting comments like that to be 'different' or get noticed.

Im not saying women/girls shouldn't wear skirts whatsoever but schools haven't got the time to be telling every girl to stop rolling their skirts up. Therefore banning skirts at school is a way of making those girls safer.

Im sure lots of 'notice me please' comments will follow and as i won't be coming back to 'notice' you...have fun, but think once in a while and imagine if you had a daughter

Indeed - it's a total misunderstanding of paedophilia although anyone pointing that out is a contrarian.

I think that poster is in fact on the 'saying silly things' side of the debate, which is annoying because that's usually the side I prefer.

what proof is there that "banning skirts" has any effect whatsoever on rape of schoolgirls?

would a rapist or paedophile stop himself purely because a girl was wearing trousers or leggings?

maybe they like boys and take a girl by mistake.....would he maybe kill her in anger at his discovery?

Applying a blanket ban is the lazy way out and an admission that they are unable to manage.

If skirts should be at least knee length, then it's easy to enforce whist in school. Seems like they are passing the buck and not up to the job.

Totally agree. It's not hard for teachers in the corridor to tell you to 'shorten that skirt' or whatever. If the pupils don't do that when they're told, then there are bigger issues besides skirt length.:)
