See next posts, thought these would look great on my 206!!!
Radical new tire design by Michelin. The next generation of tires.

They had a pair at the Philadelphia car show.
These tires are airless and are scheduled to be out on the market very soon.

The bad news for law enforcement is that spike strips will not work on these tires.

This is what great R&D will do, and just think of the impact on existing technology:

A. no more air valves...
B. no more air compressors at gas stations...
C. no more repair kits...
D. no more flats...

SCAN DOWN &SEE.

These are actual pictures taken in the South Carolina plant of Michelin

They look horrible!

They're kinda like run-flats without side walls, I wouldn't want any it'd be christmas for vandals

me neither, anyone with a pair of garden siccors could be a troublemaker... and it wouldn't cost as little a fixing a punture on this technology i'm sure

Stop! They look scary! How can they possibly turn a ton or so of car on a windy road?

they should cover the flexi spokes as they will get cut by the hoodies and they look awful

The suspension in them doesn't look too good. Looks really weighed down with the driver in it.

Yeah but he looks like he's turning right yet it's the left tyre thats down.

Thats because when you turn right at speed the balance of the car is thrown to the left

hmmm, ok, just doesn't look right.

So how come when you see motorbikes turning on the speedway thing they dip the same was as it's turning and not the opposite direction?

Why do people presume vandals are going to have a field day? if a vandal wants to damage a tyre they will slash it. By the look of how much they flex I don't think you'll be getting much MPG out of them.

Ok a simple anaolog that women may understand for the weight shift on car tires when cornering, compare a car turning at speed in a circle with a washing machine drum spinning, when the drum spins it creates a centrigual force that propels the weight of the contents to the outer edge, this is shifting the gravity, when a car corners this is the same effect.

or to put it another way:

Terracotta.

Thanks for putting in the effort but that still doesn't help me as the washing machine analogy just makes me think the tyre should be rounder. LOL

This is something I'm not too bothered about not knowing though, I'll just be happy knowing that other people know how it works. :-D

Ps, whats the deal with the offside rule? :-P

You're in a shoe shop, second in the queue for the till. Behind the shop assistant on the till is a pair of shoes which you have seen and which you must have.
The female shopper in front of you has seen them also and is eyeing them with desire.
Both of you have forgotten your purses.
It would be totally rude to push in front of the first woman if you had no money to pay for the shoes.
The shop assistant remains at the till waiting.
Your friend is trying on another pair of shoes at the back of the shop and sees your dilemma.
She prepares to throw her purse to you.
If she does so, you can catch the purse, then walk round the other shopper and buy the shoes.
At a pinch she could throw the purse ahead of the other shopper and, whilst it is in flight you could nip around the other shopper, catch the purse and buy the shoes.
Always remembering that until the purse had actually been thrown it would be plain wrong to be forward of the other shopper.

Congratulations - You have just learned the offside rule!

Hope that helps

What if your other friend was standing just ahead of you but not interfering with purchase? :whistling:

as you are turing a corner at speed your velocity decreases so there is a greater force on the back of the bike, newton's 3rd law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, so when a force is applied towards the corner an equal and opposite force is applied back onto the bike and so it "pushes" it the other way, due to the lack of friction the bike it essintially skids, but since the wheels are still running a forward force is applied and the resultant force will guide you round the bend. This phenomina is known to man as over steer, the effects of this can be limited by applying downforce to increase the friction between the car and the road but there would be nowhere to mount a wing on a bike so the effect is increased.

I hope i didnt over complicate things for you there:thumbsup:

Here's a motorbike racer sharply turning:

Although the bike only has two wheels, you can see here the bike's wheels which are taking all the pressure where as the rider's knee is not support any weight. This is the same with the picture of the car turning, all the weight has been transferred to the front left of the car which is why you see such visible compression in the tyre.

John

Thanks for that, I get that it happens and kinda get the principals of newtons 3rd law in that I know what it means but dont really know how it works. Physics is not a strong point but thanks anyway. :-)

An easier way to think of it would be to imagine sliding a cube along the ground with a ball inside it, as you accelerate the cube along the ground the ball will move to the back and as you break it will go to the front. If you slow down and turn the cube to the right, the ball will go to the front left as that's the direction it was already going.

It's similar with cars, as you accelerate forwards the weight is transferred to the back of the car which is why many sports cars are rear wheel drive. As you slow your forward motion and turn right, the weight is going to be mainly transferred to the front left wheel which is what is going to stop the car just sliding forwards and let it turn the corner.

Bizarre logic there like, any troublemaker now could grab a stanley knife from the shed and destroy 100's of peoples tires in less time than cutting thru one of these. Cant shelve tech cos some dingbat might damage a few lol

I would say it's the fact these are a more tempting target - they stand out quite a bit more than a standard tyre.
