selling laptop, what program to clear personal data / history?

never had need for one of these before (no it's not pr0n) but googling only brings up the chargeable programs.

anyone got any recommendations for a free prog?

or if not free, anything recommended so that i can download the cracked torrent or whatever....

    cheers

hmm, yeah not sure, i might have had saved passwords etc. on there, but as long as ccleaner gets rid of those (permanently?) there wasn't loads of confidential info on there....

    do you use firefox?

just IE on this particular one (six years old)...

The right way to do it is use a program like dban.org/ to totally wipe the drive and prevent recovery, then install the Operating System again

ok, have got the recovery discs, so thanks for the tip and link.

You can also use something like "File Shredder" ( freeware) to overwrite your free diskspace after running you cleanup software such as "CCleaner".

    File Shredder
    delete files beyond recovery

    Our Rating: 3.5 stars (Good!)

File Shredder enables you to delete files beyond recovery, using multiple passes, DoD 5220-22.M or the Gutmann method. The program can wipe individual files or entire folders (with optional subfolders), and also integrates with the right-click menu for convenient access from within Windows Explorer. File Shredder can also wipe the free disk space on selected drives, allowing you to erase traces of files that have been deleted previously by using standard deletion methods.

if you have a recovery disk (so you can reinstall the OS) you should use killdisk, there is a free version it will totally wipe your harddrive and make the data very very difficult to recover (designed to prevent data theft), if you buy it you can get better deletion methods (best one is Gutmann method) but the free one will do perfectly fine.

Really simple to use and doesnt take too long providing you have the recovery disks.

[update] you can easily get a cracked version too if thats your preference lol.
