Selling windows 7 but need some advice

Hi, I am selling Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (Full Retail Version) on ebay but i am selling it as used, i installed it once and activated but found out i can't run all my older software so i went and bought windows 7 ultimate, now i have heard something about that you can phone up microsoft and get a new cd-key off them, is this right? i've never done anything like this so i would really like some info on how to do this as i would really like to sell the boxed windows 7 for a good price if i can sell it as new with a new cd-key.

Thanks for your help on this

the product key is for a single individual once you have used it you cant sell it on

If it is the cardboard boxed retail version, there should be no problem at all.

It will either reactivate automatically via the Internet or the new owner may have to phone a Freephone number and say "I have just installed Windows on my new computer and wiped it off the old one".

If it is a foil pack version (OEM), then it can not be legally transferred to a new computer.

how much is it worth unused ? Premium full retail version ?

Thanks for the reply, it is the cardboard boxed retail version, i was thinking about trying to install it on my other pc to see if it would just do like you said (reactivate automatically via the Internet) if not i could maybe phone microsoft myself and maybe get a new key as i know some buyers can be funny about having to do thing's like that and end up leaving me a bad feedback.

My brother sold his same one as mine boxed and sealed on ebay yesterday for £72.99 so that's why i was hopeing to get around that price. :whistling:

The product key and activation key are both different - you can't get a new one for a buyer. Basically when you install Windows 7 it generates an identifier based on the hardware in your system, it then goes online to the MS activation system which decides whether to activate it or not. This way MS can tell how different your hardware is to the previous activation, if it's a different PC but it's been a while since the license was activated it should go through fine on activation but if it's been activated recently it's likely the system will prompt the user to phone them up. As Summoner has detailed above, they'll ask you to confirm the previous install is wiped and then hopefully give a new confirmation key manually for you to type in.

Because you don't have the potential buyer's hardware, there's no way you can get the activation key and ensure it will work - if you try activating again on your license it's going to make it potentially more difficult for another reactivation on the buyer's hardware.

Thanks John, I understand now that it's best to leave it up to the buyer to do the activation with microsoft, i just need to know one more thing, if the buyer phones up will microsoft ask for any details like where the windows was bought from etc as i don't want the buyer asking me for any my personal details etc as they can't get a new key from microsoft without the purchase details.

Thanks again for all your help everyone

Ultimate (and Professional) have the "XP Mode" option (actually Virtual PC) that Home Premium does not have.

However I thought W7 was better at running most older apps.

Automatic online activation will fail when the buyer installs the software; they will be prompted to ring up the automated number and when asked how many computers they have installed the software on they must confirm "1". A new key will be generated, they type that in and the "Windows Genuine Advantage" logo appears to confirm activation. Simples.

That's fantastic thanks
