    Sending Laptop off!

    Hey People,

Friends laptop which I bougth for him is being collected tomorrow by the warranty firm. Now his laptop shut down whilst making a DVD of his childrens birthday party. The laptop had a habit of rebooting and then for it to work again it would need a reformat.

Now the laptop just shows boot mgr missing. The warranty firm are collecting it tomorrow.

Will they have access to these documents i.e. his family photos and CVs etc
The thing is I have a vista disc which I could use to reformat the laptop? laptop originally came with windows 7.

    Would this invalidate the warranty?

    Anyone?

Yep, they'll have complete access to everything he's got on it, unless the files are encrypted. They probably aren't. Tell him to use Truecrypt for personal stuff in future.

REgarding your Vista disc, yes, you can use that to reformat the laptop, but that'll delete everything he's got on it.

Your best bet is to boot with the Vista DVD and run the automated Startup repair tool (google Windows Reinstall for a guide on this) . It should fix the issue.

    Cheers bud!

The problem is the original restore disc got damaged hence no recovery disc. So thought why not use my original vista disc and hopefully sort something out!

Aye man, some good thinking. Give it a try, and hopefully you can can get the system booting up into Windows. There's a fair chance that the warranty call's going to be unavoidable, since it might be that the BSOD and subsequent Window breaking was caused by physical problems with the harddisk, but I reckon there's definitely a strong chance that you'll have a functioning install of Windows after running the startup repair tool. See if you can dump the dude's documents and stuff to an external drive as soon as you can once it's up and running though, it mightn't last for long.

boot mgr missing is usually caused by a corrupt file as simple as that, there is downloads for the windows 7 repair disc floating around the internets, see if you can grab one of those and use that to repair.

Formatting and re-installing windows WILL NOT wipe his data, it will all … Formatting and re-installing windows WILL NOT wipe his data, it will all still be there.

Correct, unless the data is written over several times the files are still recoverable, however I cant see the manufacturers going to this extreme to recover data even after a basic format.
