sending money to a seller as a gift- Do i lose buyer protection?

i want to buy somethin but dont want to incur any fees, is this risky, am i covered, just like i would be if it was for a service??

Yes, you are not covered if the item does not arrive or if it is not as described.
If you are concerned send the money via paypal normal and pay the fees.

Its the seller that incurs fees when you use the normal Paypal method. That's why sellers ask you to pay by paypal gift so they don't pay fees. Of course this also means no one has any protection if the item doesn't show up
