    NO!!!!!

    get a cheque from them!!!

Definitely not! Ask them to send you an UNCROSSED Postal Order instead....or a cheque if they are willing to wait for it to clear and you're ok with the hassle of going to the bank etc

isnt that info on every cheque you send out?

Still sounds dodgy though, tell them to send you a cheque and you will send item as soon as it clears.

eh, yes...it is safe to give out.

My account number is 5622590 and sort is 60-30-22 and it's Barry Herd, incase you want to give me some money. Just don't do it tomorrow, because the end of the world is near...

those details are fine to give out it is exactly what is on a cheque

    dnt listen to the scaremongers......

As above - safe to give out. All they can do is put money INTO your account. They CANNOT withdraw any. Also as a seller it's safer - no chargebacks!

thats what i thought.. i thought that because all the info im going to give is on my bank card, account number and sort code then it was safe to give out. otherwise there would be no point in the chip and pin system right? or cvt number ect. can anybody else please elaborate on this for me please. appreciate the replys tho.

I think it's down to the individual then but I wouldn't ever give my bank details out

Perfectly safe, I have accepted bank transfers many times. Like others have pointed out, it's the same info printed on your cheques. There's one BUT...they could set up a Direct Debit using your account. But Direct Debit guarantee would refund you anyway. I've never had this happen to me and I think it's unlikely it ever will.

Much better than paypal for sellers as well as you will have no paypal fees to pay as well

Well bit of a catch 22 there if the buyer is reading this, as you are saying in one post to get them to send a cheque which has all the details on that you say you would never give out!

All you need is someones name, their account number, sort code and bank. then you can get a direct debit.

    And do what with it?
Set a fake one up with a charity to prove a point? Which the customer then gets back straight away under the DD guarantee, and the 'fraudster' doesn't profit from at all. What would be the point of that?

To prove the person who gave their details out is an idiot.

If I remember correctly the last time this question was asked people were saying that people could transfer money to America with just a Bank Account number and sort code. Sounded like cobbledash to me then....

Why didn't it happen thousands of times a day when people used cheques all the time then?

    Who the xxxx knows that.

What you should do is create an current account for eBay etc; so you can give it out and they can only steal what you have in it at that time (IE not your salary, savings etc) as your 'normal' money is in a n other accounts.

Also if it gets frozen by the bank under terrorist law (freeze accounts where money coming in cannot be identified) you don't get trapped with paying bills and salary being paid in and you can't get to it (happended to a HM customs friend of mine would you believe).

    Cheers
