Service fee on airbnb

I just booked a cottage on airbnb and the service fee is £30 but when I got to the payment page it had increased to £39? I have paid anyway but wondered why this increase from quote to payment?

Anyone else noticed this when they booked through airbnb? This is the first time that I have booked via their website.

if VAT then it should state this at the quote stage but if it did not then £30 with VAT at 20% is £36. It stated £39 before it asked me what type of card I was paying with so it did not state that a credit card will incur a fee. I may have not paid enough attention but I normally see a warning of credit card payment levy, then I normally pay with debit card if I see this. I did not see this warning during the booking but it did give me a few pages of airbnb terms and conditions, so unless it is buried in there some where.

not a very professional site for what it is really.

IIRC, you don't get the service fee back if you cancel your booking, even if the house owner refunds you the rental amount.

Yes. I guessed this. It is unusual to get refund on cancellation without paying a premium first, and then you probably wont get a full refund anyway so this is acceptable.

i am just puzzled at the increase between quote and payment of their service fee. They seem to underquote to get you interested.
