Setting up a wireless network in uni halls

***Before people say i am not allowed i have checked the terms and conditions of the university i will be starting at in September and it states i can run a private wireless network for myself.***

As many of you know most halls only come with one Ethernet port in rooms.

My question is mainly about what i would need too set this up. I have done a bit of research and have come to the conclusion that i need a wireless access point. Am i right? This will allow me to connect my laptop, Xbox and phone to the network wirelessly.

If i'm wrong please correct me, or if i'm right could you please link me to a *CHEAP* access point as i'm on a budget

    Thank You!

something like this will do the job
    amazon.co.uk/Net…03A

    there are smaller ones too

    amazon.co.uk/TP-…WG6

though there is an amazon warning on it at the moment
his product is not currently offered by Amazon.co.uk because a customer recently told us that the item he or she received was not as described.

We are working to resolve this as quickly as possible. In the meantime, you may still find this product available from other sellers on this page.

actually in halls this one also has a phone charger so its probably a better option

If you have an Ethernet port you can hook your laptop to it then broadcast your internet via the laptop to xbox and phone etc over a wireless connector. Look at a piece of software called Connectify. It's free or go pro for a little cash. Means your laptop has to be on to broadcast the wireless but you can see all devices and there's not much bandwidth lost as a result which is handy.

When I say wireless connector I mean you wifi built in to your laptop too. So really you can do it free but downside is laptop on 24/7

Yes a small unit much like the Sky wifi extender will suffice

I have some wireless routers to sell if interested... support included in price :P

Yes you're correct, you can grab one for about £20 off Amazon. Should work fine, I would just recommend reading the manual and turning off SSID broadcast and set at least WPA2 password.

Thanks for the reply guys so i think i am going to go for this one Your text here. With this then all i would need to do is plug it into the Ethernet port and away i go? obviously i'll make it secure, but i'll look up how to do that another time.

    Thank You!!

Try connectify (as per redcastle) first - it does work

I would try that but i am wary of leaving my laptop on all the time as it gets very hot and I would like to move my laptop around the room not just stuck on my desk

Don't get the Belkin, I used one at university, the device couldn't even handle a 100Mbit connection properly

    that shouldn't be an issue

why would your laptop get hot - only if your are excessively over using the laptop (eg highend games) then it shouldn't cause the laptop to overheat.

Have you considered the possibility of excessive dust blocking the vents and stuck to the blades of the fan internally?

Do not use air dust sprays/cans of compressed air - you will just move the dust around inside your laptop. Search youtube for tutorial on stripping down/cleaning your laptop
