Sex-on-beach trial Britons guilty

A British man and woman have been sentenced to three months in jail in Dubai after being found guilty of having sex on a beach.

Michelle Palmer, 36, of Oakham, Rutland, and Vince Acors, 34, of Bromley, south-east London, were arrested on 5 July.

They were fined 1,000 dirhams (£160; $350) and will be deported after serving their sentences.

Their lawyer says the pair will appeal against the verdict.

A spokesman for the judge said Acors and Palmer would be jailed and then deported for the offences of unmarried sex and public indecency.

He added that they had been fined for being drunk in a public place.

"The sentence of three months is usual in these cases. We get many cases of this kind," he said.

Acors and Palmer were not at Dubai's Court of First Instance to hear the ruling but had been ordered not to leave the emirate.

Their defence lawyer Hassan Matter said the pair were upset but not surprised by the verdict.

"They are not guilty but they were prepared for this," he said.

He said he was hopeful the conviction would be overturned.

"I think I have a chance in the appeal court. I have 15 days to appeal. I have to find the reason why the judge gave three months."

Acors and Palmer will remain on bail until their appeal is heard at the court.

Senior prosecutor Faisal Abdelmalek Ahli said he was disappointed at the length of sentence.

"I'm not happy," he said, speaking outside court. "It's very light. It's normal for a sentence to be six months to a year for an offence such as this."

Mr Ahli said he expected Acors and Palmer to serve their full three-month term in a Dubai prison.

"Sometimes people serve half their sentence, but this is so short I expect they will serve it all," he said.

The pair were arrested on Jumeirah Beach hours after meeting at a champagne brunch at Dubai's five-star Le Meridien hotel.

A police officer told the court he had warned the pair about their inappropriate behaviour, but returned later to find them having sex on a sun lounger.

Palmer, who was sacked from her job in Dubai as a publishing executive after her arrest, said in a statement she and Acors had been "just kissing and hugging".

Mr Matter said witness statements, including one from the police officer, were "wrong" and medical examinations had proved Palmer had not had sex on the beach.

Friends of Palmer say she has been admitted to hospital in recent weeks suffering from anxiety and depression.

The case has turned the spotlight on the lifestyle of the 120,000 British residents of the United Arab Emirates.

The BBC's Christian Fraser, in Dubai, says there have been concerns lately that tourists are ignoring the emirate's strict Islamic laws and that the outcome of this case will be a warning that such drunken behaviour will not be tolerated in public.

I agree with the decision. If you go to another country you should obey their laws (no matter how silly they may be).

But us Brits and the Yanks think they can do whatever they like, wherever they like!

I've got no problem with that. Just wished we didnt feel the need to compensate our own laws and beliefs.

>They were fined 1,000 dirhams (£160; $350) and will be deported after serving their sentences.

And how much will they be able to sell their story for when they get back to the UK.

A lot more than their fine.

It is probably financially worth them doing it.

My personal opinion that the Brits and Yanks (when they were considered as super powers) were used to imposing their own laws and beliefs upon the rest of the world and to a certain degree, could get away with it.

But the world today is different. They no longer can do this or they should. People need to recognise that whe you are in another country, then new rules will apply!

That guy should be thankful they never cut off his w1lly. lol

I too think they should respect the laws of the Country but they should all respect ours when in our Country, We tend to bend our rules for foreign people who don't understand our laws.

At the end of the day if you've got the urge then nature should be allowed to take it's coarse. Are they going to lock chimps up for doing it in a public place?

Firstly, we aren't animals (although some may disagree. lol) Secondaly as human beings we should be able to control these urges when you are in a foreign country and in a public place! Finally I doubt you will find any chimps having it off on a beach in dubai. ;-)

I think if you look at humans as in an Alien sort of way, Take away politics and religion and we generally act just like other animals.

The fact that we can understand right from wrong and have the ability to refrain from wrongs is one of the things that seperate us from apes. Just because apes fling their poo and fight each other should that mean if we get the urge to do we should just go ahead?

on topic though yeah I agree they broke the law and should serve the time, but as been said. Its unfortunate that in the UK we seem happy to allow people who choose to live here and benefit from the system to crticise our laws and force the govt to accomodate them

finally some sense

tbh i dont know any country in the world where it is legal to have sex in a public place so there is no argument that they broke the law regardless of what country they did it in. I dont think we should judge how other countries punish law breakers when we lock people up for 28 days without charge/evidence and when we give pathetic sentences to those who commit serious crimes such as murder, rape and peadophiles. We even release prisoners early because there is not enough space in jail:)

Maybe they were telling the truth about not actually having sex and the truth has been bent isnt it the law (religeous law) there that a woman shall not show love/emotion towards men other than her husband???

as they did get done for two offences;

does that mean if i go on holiday with my boyfriend if i have sex with him in this country (in a hotel room not outdoors!) i can be arrested, never told my friend that when they sold him a holiday there with his girlfriend

Farcical the whole thing just to make an example, I can understand the public indecency of course but you cannot force foreign nationals to marry that is a human rights issue.

I don't see where any attempts have been made to force foreign nationals to marry.

According to "modern" genetics the closest genetic match to humans is a pig (hence why pigs can be used for growing human hearts for transplants, other animals reject human hearts)
Also according to "older" religious texts the Cursed nazarine became "swine and apes"
Living creatures show an "intelligent" design, and there are too many coincidences in nature.

Also scientific discovery above appears only to confirm religious belief from hundreds of years ago.

i learned years ago not to start an arguement on religion. trust me. you just go on believing in what you want. and ill believe what i want but do read about speciation if you get the chance. will answer that question on why there are still apes if we evolved from them.

Because the design of an Ape is not a fatal flaw within its environment therefore while variations will exist and evolve there's nothing to stop the original species. In some cases if a certain change in offsrping does benefit the species for survival then the earlier versions are likely to die out.

I think you're getting your wires a bit crossed with regards to genetics and compatibility as the latter does not mean pigs are closer genetically.

Going back on topic if the couple were warned earlier then they've really only got themselves to blame, I tend to be quite paranoid when following other country's laws - I think it is something you have to be careful with.

OK forget the religious side of things:

In a documentary about cannibals the presenter asked the locals what human flesh tastes like, the reply was "it looks, tastes and (when cooking) smells the same as meat from pigs.

i dont relly get what ur getting at? frogs legs taste like chicken? the point being?

Humans are mammals, those cannibals would probably find the taste is same across most mammals. Pigs are not closely related to humans, both are mammals but that's about it - surely it's obvious how much more we share with other primates? There are several reasons for choosing pigs, they are quick and easy to breed and their organs about the right size. They're not actually compatible with humans, the pigs have to genetically modified to prevent a certain molecule being produced which causes immediate rejection in humans.

This is one big hurdle that has been overcome but there are still several to go, one of the main ones being disease - a pig immune system can protect it against certain diseases which a human system cannot, introducing a pig organ to a human could cause the human system to come under attack from these diseases.

From what I understand, their sentence is already lighter than what it could have been.
If they are set free early, then that is a slap in the face for the laws of that country.
As it stands, this should be a reminder to people to respect local laws.
