Scenario:

I have a Playstation 4 with PSN+.

My son is getting a PS4 for Christmas however does not live with me.

Question:

1) Would both my son and I be able to use my account to play the Digital games that i have downloaded and also go online at the same time?

2) if possible, which device would I need to set as primary and would he require a sub account?

* Apologies but a lot of the articles I have read are either unclear or confusing.

As far as I understand it -

You'd have to set his PS4 as your primary.
He'd then be able to access all your games and PS+ from his own account (Doesn't need to be a sub-account)

Then you can continue using your own PS4 as you did before, however your games will only be available if you log in as yourself.

What he said mate, I do this with my brother

My cousin does this. I believe you can link multiple consoles to one account (max 4, correct me if I'm wrong).

So your son would be able to log in to psn as you, register the console, then if you make any digital purchases, you can log in one at a time to download them. However, only one of you can log in at any one time, say you purchase Call of Duty and both downloaded it, only one of you can be online at a given time to play it. If you want to play at the same time, you would either need your own PSN accounts or to play on the same console using split screen. There are regular deals on psn membership so an annual one usually comes to £30 or just over. I usually use CDkeys.

In response to the last question, I don't think there is a primary/sub option as you can register up to 4 devices.

Good luck
Matt

Yes, you can do this and play at the same time. I have set my sons as my primary and his as mine. He can play online off the back of my PS+ sub too. If PSN is down I can't access my own games and they just have a padlock symbol until PSN gets restored where he can carry on unrestricted offline.

Watch out for DLC though. COD DLC is account specific and I made the mistake of putting it on my account once even though I don't play multiplayer. All my Destiny DLC has been fine on both accounts and Starwars Battlefront has also.

Also watch out for age restricted sub accounts. I set one up for my son and then he couldn't play Destiny because of its age rating which I think is about 16 despite there being nothing in it I found to be unsuitable. So I had to then set him up a regular adult account.

As soon as you go online the age restriction kicks in, depending on the rating of the game. I had the same issue with my daughter.

Yeah it was a pain. I am not the type to let my kids play GTA 5 and I don't let them play the COD campaigns or Battlefield for example but I do think some of the online ratings are a bit heavy.

Thanks all for the responses. So in a nutshell, we can both play different games online, just not the same one at the same time? Will he also share my gamertag or is that where a sub-account comes in to it?

No, you can definitely play the same game at the same time. Just set him up an account of his own and make his system your primary by adding your account to it and activating it. Make sure you deactivate your own PS4 as your primary first otherwise you can't do this. I was playing Titanfall on Sunday night online with my lad on the same team on the digital download I did in the flash sale for £31something from CD keys for £35 credit.

If he logs in on your account he will fire you straight out of your session as you can only be logged into your own account on one system at a time. The only time you will need to do this is to access your library to download your games onto your sons PS4. When getting the monthly PS4 games you can send them straight to your Primary PS4 from your PC which means they automatically pop up on his system but not mine.

Ok, so I think I'm finally getting my head round this:

* My son will get his Playstation and setup a new account (own PSN ID etc..)
* I will login to my account on his Playstation and set it as the Primary so that PSN+ is shard with his account.
* Even though he logs in to his own account/PSN ID, he can still access my downloadable games such as Minecraft.
* All I then have to do is just use my account as normal from home?

Correct?

One final thing I would advise is setting up password on purchases to avoid any spontaneous game purchases without your knowledge
