An 18-month-old boy has died of his injuries, a week after being shot in the head with an airgun in the garden of his home, police said.

Rashid Ullah, who had been in a critical condition since the shooting on August 24, died at Birmingham Children's Hospital, West Midlands Police said.

Officers are treating the incident, which happened in the garden of Rashid's home in Washwood Heath, Birmingham, as a tragic accident.

In a short statement, a police spokeswoman confirmed that Rashid had died of injuries in hospital.

The youngster's family had previously urged anyone in possession of airguns to be wary of the possible consequences of injuries caused by them.

In a statement issued three days after the shooting, the toddler's family said: "We hope that anyone who has an air weapon realises how dangerous these guns can be and what serious injuries they can cause.

"We do not wish to add anything further at this difficult time for our family and would ask the media to respect our privacy."

The boy's grandfather has said that Rashid was accidentally shot by his five-year-old sister as they played with their father in the garden of their home.

The exact circumstances of how the weapon came to be discharged are still being investigated, but it is thought that Rashid's father, Bakht Zaman, was using the gun moments before the accident, which happened shortly before 7pm.

Poor child.

Both him & his sister in truth....

Very sad, never been a fan of any of those sort of "toys". Should be banned IMO and people should be more responsible.

felt sad when i heard .....rip......

Eighteen years ago a family member lost his eye due to an air rifle and yet I have read of these "tragic accidents" happening just about each year since. I believe that these should have been banned years ago and that they are no longer accidents but a failure by governments to protect the public by passing the necessary laws. Perhaps, not a ban but stringent conditions on sales, how they are kept, etc. I hope the family can deal with what has happened and my heart goes out to them.

God bless little one xxx

He was very cute, RIP little one.

Just shows you how dangerous they are, I didn't immediately think of air rifles as being 'lethal' weapons.

Imagine how the parents feel.

Such a loss R.I.P, such a shame!!

I have an air rifle , guns dont kill people , People do ......I shoot in my back garden sometimes ..... whenever you leave a gun anywhere .( which you should never do around kids ) you uncock it remove the pellet and place the gun somewhere safe. not blaming anyone but ..........you wouldnt leave your kids in a car not strapped in on a hill ...... If they can get to the handbrake theres a possibility of an accident ....this guy might not have had gun sense like that .......I'm sure he's gonna suffer enough without people judging him , I know it would rip me apart so my feelings go out to him too

very sad however the father should be facing man slaughter. How irresponsible. He should be locked up

Tbh if it were up to me i would ban air riffles and bb guns of anyform in the UK. I was shot in the eye with one and if it had been 1mm to the left i would have lost my eye apparently. Now the parents must be feeling horrible. But it was and always will be his fault!

I really don't think it would do any good!!! How would that help the family and his daughter. I wondered how long it would take for someone to have a go. I would guess that they probably know that they have made a mistake and will live with that forever.
Please can this not turn into a blame the parents thread

Guns were designed to kill ponds wasn't

I was just about to say that, dont turn this into an argument as a little boy has lost his life!! Have respect people and what happens to his parents is upto the police!!

So tragic RIP Baby Rashid

I hope for the sake of the remaining children that they get taken into care... what kind of father leaves a loaded gun (real or fake) around children. Lets hope the authorities act on this!

yes and i wish you didn't have an air rifle coz i hate guns and think they are dangerous. though that is all you've known since growing up as your dad used to take you shooting (safely). i think guns should not be allowed as somewhere along the line people seem to get hurt (accidentally or not) i dont want our kids growing up thinking it's right to keep an air rifle in the house

I agree with you there, my ex had air rifles & i always used to nag him about leaving them on kitchen work top, never loaded but the point was he had a gun cabinet & thats where it should be locked away when not in use....but too easy to get sidetracked and put it down for a sec & kids like you said are inquisitive and would copy what they see as at that age not aware of the full dangers. very very sad.

Not only leaves it nearby but actually used it in front of them FFS!

I don't understand why people want these things anyway, or BB guns. All I ever read is about people or pets being injured by the things...what exactly are they 'supposed' to be used for?

this is just wrong...r.i.p little un

Lessons can be learned here and i hope it makes all owners of Air rifles seriously think about how they handle and store their gun.

I wouldn'y say i grew up with guns but my dad owned an air rifle and a shotgun and we used to do target practice with the Air rifle/ shoot birds to feed to our hawk when i was young, we would also go hunting etc and I had my own shotgun to use. The important thing was he drilled into me the correct procedure for handeling the guns. I do plan on getting an air rifle when i get my own place as i think they are great fun for target practice.

No-noe can beat themselves up over this more than the father. I bet he wishes he didn't pick up that phone cos no phone call would be worth your child to be dead. He knows blood is on his hands and he will have to live with this for the rest of his life.

I just hope some others who do posess these weapons, take heed and learn from this tragic accident. Sometimes, those extra seconds to make sure something is put away safely, can save someone's life :-) xx

as i think they are great fun for target practice.

this is my point, target practice for what exactly?? There are a zillion other things you can do that are great fun that don't use a lethal weapon.

sad indeed

I have an air rifle and pistol both in a locker, some people do treat air guns as toys that's why I bought the air pistol off my mate as it was scary watching him use it. Pointing it at me and saying "ow it's not loaded" so WHAT you don't point any type of gun at someone full stop. I would vote for a full ban on air and BB guns. Scary thing about the air pistol it has the feel, look and weight of a real gun with walnut wood grip.

Indeed. Lets not use anything in life that could kill someone.

Ban archery.

Whats the point in the jevelin? You could kill someone with it, lets ban it.

There is no point to a lot of fun things.

You are talking about organised sports....not your next door neighbour taking pot shots from their back garden.

Don't recall any incidents like this involving someone getting injured using a javelin at home or even doing archery at home.

Do you think the Hungerford and Dunblane massacres would have been the same if the killer used a bow & arrow or a javelin?

Same here mate , Gun sense, If its taught correctly and drilled into you. Its really relaxing target practice as well , probs akin to some people liking fishing
