Found 15th Aug 2009
I had a bloke (aged around 55) knock on my door at about 8pm asking me if somebody lived at my address.

He was apparently looking for his 15 year old grand daughter who'd been missing for 36 hours and had been given my address by her friend.

I pointed him in the direction of a similar road on the back of my house (Road/Ave/Cres etc instead)

Just wondering whether you think I should inform the police to let them know that said person does not live here, and to log this blokes visit.

He seemed like he didn't believe me, but I suppose he would have been obviously worried.

Opinion?

Yep I would just to be sure beter safe than sorry later.

yes,cannot do any harm

Contact the police A.S.A.P sounds like a wierdo these people need to be locked up

Report it !!

It's the opportunist to see if anyone was in...no answer then they go round the back...if someone answers then they use the old "does whover live here or have you seen my lost pet etc etc.

If his daughter was lost for more than 24hrs then the police would have been round especially if someone had given your address as a possible contact.

We get enquiries at our address all the time for the other road with the same name but ends with Way instead!

Saying that if the girl is genuinely missing - theres no harm in telling police anyway!

I would always err on the side of caution!

He did say that the police had been told.

He just seemed to give wayyy more information than I really cared to know.

Ie. "She's been missing for 36 hours"
"The police know"
"Her friend said that said person lives here"

He didn't seem that dodgy, just seemed to hang there for a bit too long after I told him he'd got the wrong address, like he was waiting for me to blurt out I had her tied up in the back room or something.

I got his number plate and vehicle details.

Just logged it with the local police - won't do any harm, and gave them a contact telephone number to save them battering my door down at 3am...

Yep follow everyones advice and contact the police.

It could have been genuine and his daughters friends had given the wrong address, but its better to have this on record. I don't wanna scare you but he could have been seing if there was anyone at home, or to see if anyone was there alone or how old they were. I live in a seemingly good area, but lately a lot of the elderly couples have been targeted for burlary even when theyre at home.

Edit: Wow i would have just called the police but you got his car details and reg. Looks like you were able to think quickly on your feet.
Well youve the the right thing anyway.

Enjoy the rest of your night and try to forget about it.

Sometimes people use distraction whilst another person is doing something else.

You have nothing to lose in reporting this..

This week my over the road neighbour was 'burgled' - well they got in but the radiator fell off the wall and they ran away. But the neighbour didn't report it to the police!

How are we going to pre-warn other people if people don't inform the police of events?

she rubs the lotion on her skin

could be a genuine grandad looking for his grandaughter....i personally wouldn't have been too worried..if one of my girls had run away and someone had given me an address i would have done exactly the same, and i would have hung around to see if she had poked her head out of the door, but if you feel that he was dodgy phone the police

Really, if you'd have seen how he seemed to hang there even after I'd told him he was probably after the road behind, you'd be suspicious.

Add to that the fact that I live in a new house that nobody has lived in previously.

I waited until later on to see if the police contacted me.

As someone's already said, if my address was given as a possible location then surely they would have contacted me by now.

if you aint anything to hide dont worry ------------------but if i were you i would move the gucci stuff to be sure lol:p

This could be geniune or not, if you are that unsure and even asking for advice then just report it.

It is quite simple ring up your local Police station via the local number and tell them of what the person said and do and they should submit an intelligence report that could either be useful now or in the future.

Try and give as mush information as possible i.e what he said, accent what he looked like and why you felt he was suspicious.

If the Police do know then they would have been to your house to check your address because dealing with missing people is very serious and no corners are cut and if there are any lines of enquiry then they will be done straight away or as soon as Police find out the information.

I work for the Police and if members of public report this kind of thing to me then i submit an intelligence report because you never know.

There was a case on crimewatch where a guy was visting address and trying to sell stuff ,2 days later they went to a address in the area and committed a nasty armed robbery on an elderly couple, you never know if that person came forward then it might just have helped or alerted the Police.

Let us know how you get on, also what Police area do you live in

no but as i said before if your kid/grandkid has gone missing and someone had given you an address, right or not, wouldn't you stalk it to make sure they were safe ?

Don't get me wrong, you're at ground zero so should go with your gut instinct:thumbsup: I just think it sad that people instantly assume the worst without even being part of the action. Does that make sense?

Certainly would. That's why I said he didn't seem that dodgy, genuine story + He parked his car infront of my house (would have probably not wanted anything identifiable if it was more sinister).

As said previously, won't do any harm to let the police know my details. I didn't phone the police straight away, as I thought they would contact me if they actually thought this connected person was here, but after 3+ hours, I started to wonder.

For the record, I still think it was a genuine enquiry. The police said there was a house the same number as mine on the road I told the bloke, so he probably found out what he was after there.

TBH i would have told him to naff off at 8pm at night. Contact the police straight away. Not being distrusting or anything but in todays society you have got to be.

I gave him all the detail I could to help him.

Told him I was the only person that's ever lived here, and about the similarly named road.

Told him I'd never heard of the person he was asking about.

Helped as much as I could.

This happened before.. it was on Crimewatch.

Someone asked if x lived at x. They said no.

That was that.

Later on They came back with a group of people.

One of the men who lived in the house was shot dead.

You can't trust anyone these days.
