Should you ask to recline your seat?

So I'm on a bus between Santander and Madrid for numerous hours. Was sitting peacefully for a few stops when a couple of Americans sat in front. No bother since I've got headphones and can drown out their asinine chat. Within 5 minutes, both recline their seats...I was writing some notes on my tablet which then folded within itself. She noticed but didn't give a hoof since she thought it was something belonging to her.

So my question is, should I have said something? What I find interesting is pretty much every other passenger is Spanish and none have reclined their seats (bus is nearly full). Personally, I don't think it's a good idea she's done this as I've got a very nasty virus right now with a yucky cough.

Been throughout Europe on plenty of buses and trains and not had this happen before.

Thoughts? Maybe I'll just give her permission to catch my cold....cough cough.

Whenever I see someone trying to recline the seat in front of me on a plane or in a coach, I push my knees forward to stop them doing so (I’ve got long legs, being 6ft.2in). It’s funny to see them struggling to get the seat reclined and then giving up. No one has ever suspected that I am stopping it.
Just keep coughing, kick her seat, fidget in your seat making sure to knock or bang on her seat, if you have something soft i.e bag accidentally on purpose tap (cough, cough, pardon the pun) her head with it. When she wakes up and gives you a scowl or dirty look, just apologise and say there isn't much room.
Tell her to move her

It's their seat. They are entitled to recline it. You could recline yours to regain the space. If you choose not to then that's your choice.

Just ask her politely to not recline the seat so far, of she refuses suggest she look around.

She's now asleep. Seats are all designated so not possible to move elsewehre. Maybe I'm mean or a young grump but I don't care how tired you might be, at least ask. Like I say, no one else is reclining their seat.
if it reclines then why not? If there is a convention to not relcine seats in Spain then you can only find out if you say something and their is a dispute and someone else gets involved.

Is there ever a situation where you would want/wouldn't mind someone reclining their seat on you?

I can't think of a time I would want that or wouldn't mind. So it's almost pointless asking. It only works if everyone had their seat reclined or no one. So I've always thought it as stupid that they do. Inevitably the last seat doesn't recline either because of a wall the end.

Yes, you should have said something.
Brings back bad memories of a 9-10 hour flight a few years ago. Within minutes of the seat belt sign going off, the very overweight passenger in front slammed his seat into the recline position - you could almost sense the brackets creaking under the strain. We had the centre 4 seats of a 3-4-3 configuration, and with wanting so have our little ones in the middle two seats, I was left with no option but to grin and bear it. Fairly sure the crew couldn't have done anything about it if I had said anything, so I think you just have to keep your fingers crossed and hope you are lucky more often than not. There are certainly times when you wish upgrades weren't such a jump in price.

So wake her up. You'll be in pain when you get off the bus.

She probably assumes you're Spanish and can't speak English.
Be brave and say something or just keep kicking the back of her seat until she gets the message.
It is up to you to negotiate with fellow passengers.
Offering a cough sweet may have sweeten her up to hear your plead.

The first stance is not to assume that they are aware of the discomfort they are causing you.

Step 1

Engage them by asking if they are aware that they are, and if the would kindly move their seat backs to a more upright position.

Cough, sneeze, wipe your nose loudly etc
Someone should have asked you to leave and take your nasty virus with you.
They should stop reclining seats, especially on planes where there is very little room, as they invade your space and so you have to recline your seat in turn.
If the AC blowers above your head produce really cold (or even hot) air and are annoying, point them towards their heads.

Or just recline your seat and annoy the person behind you.
It's their seat. They are entitled to recline it. You could recline yours to regain the space. If you choose not to then that's your choice.

Lol, well I genuinely do keep coughing but there's some good tips so if she does happen to scowl at me, I'll know what to say. Just another couple of hours to grin and be bear it otherwise. Keep those comments coming, certainly making me chuckle.

As with everyone else deeky, I'm not passively rude. Looking around, the bus is nearly full and no one else has reclined their seat.

Listen, I sympathise with you. It's annoying. I'm just saying that it's their seat and they have the right to recline it. You could ask by all means, but I wouldn't personally as it would wind me up even more if they replied 'tough titty'.

I think you should just politely ask if she wouldn't mind adjusting her seat a bit as it's a bit uncomfortable, you'd probably be surprised with her response being, 'oh sorry I didn't realise'
Cant see why she would bite your head off unless she's a bit of a nob

Start coughing and spluttering and blowing your nose.

That or drop the C bomb really loudly.

Do you believe the seats shouldn't recline, if so take it with the company that sold you your tickets otherwise accept that they have done nothing wrong.
that is why I pay for extra leg room on a plane - cannot bear having anyone near me and the thought of someone reclining their seat, not sure about buses tho! - hope you got to Madrid OK and have a great trip!
I never reclined my seat because I prefer to sit up straight ... but it's their right to do as they want.
I took a coach once to France, others reclined their seats. That was a bad journey ... never again.

Well I got to Madrid and I can walk still lol.

Im not saying seats shouldn't recline, it would just be nice for someone to have a little common courtesy and ask if it would be ok rather than get on the bus and think they own it. Anyway, think I peeved her off with my coughing and splutering. Oh well.

Lol, I actually had someone on our aisle do that on a flight once. Was years ago but my friend and I were amazed that this person thought it was their own private living room. After an hour or so, the flight attendant noticed and went a little nuts, totally humiliating the lady. I doubt the person in question ever did it again

It could. I once had an Asian woman put her feet on my lap and attempt to go to sleep like that on a flight.

She didn't look very happy when after I got over the shock, I picked her legs up and threw her on the floor. Shame that.

Was her being Asian somehow relevant to the incident?
Like do you think it's a cultural thing?

exactly. they recline for a reason. Its not an inconvenience to you as you can recline your seat. Everyone should do this on a plane as reclining doesnt change the available area for each passenger at all if everyone did this.
Some people are just plain inconsiderate. Just tell her off. If she swears, swear back.
I was on a bus between Santander and Madrid for ages yesterday and reclined my seat to purposely close the tablet being used by the person behind me..

They had headphones on but I could hear that they were watching porn, they kept coughing to try and hide the noise but it wasn't fooling anyone.

I can't wait to get back home to Chicago.
