On the 11 November, it is once again Singles Day, the Chinese super shopping day (or week) that gets bigger and bigger with each year it is held.

Singles Day 2020 deals we think will be popular

Many AliExpress merchants are definitely taking part with big discounts on home, electricals, and telecommunications alongside everything else.

From the personal electronics side of things, expect smartphones from Xiaomi Pocophone, Xiaomi Redmi, OnePlus, and Huawei, alongside some newer budget-friendly brands.

Loads of deals on Bluetooth headphones, earphones and wireless speakers. And as usual power banks, cables and PD chargers for phones and tablets will be in large supply.

History of Singles Day

The ‘Single Sticks' holiday apparently originated in Nanjing University as a celebration of being single. In a country where it is unusual to not be married, it serves as a time for single people in China to meet and party with other singles. The reason it is held on 11 November is because of the single digits.

Somewhat ironically, it has also become a day of celebrating relationships too, and on 11 November 2011 (six singles) there were 4000 marriages in Beijing in one day, compared to the normal 11/11 numbers of around 700.

Shopping on this day is big business and in 2019, Alibaba reported selling $1 billion worth of goods in the first 68 seconds alone, and $12 billion in the first hour. To put this in context, the combined totals for Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the U.S. were just over 14 billion dollars.

It has become such a massive event in China that targets are being smashed each consecutive year by Alibaba, JD.com and Pinduoduo, among other sites. With this in mind, it is sure to get bigger in the UK and Europe in the next few years, especially for people trying to buy cheaper smartphones, laptops and tablets.


How to prepare for Singles Day

Singles Day is still relatively new to the UK, so it won’t get as busy as Black Friday but you’ll need a plan of attack. To start with, make a list of the things you want or at the very least have an idea of which brands and products you want, otherwise you will lose yourself in the depths of AliExpress and others.
