Hi

The skirting board around the house needs to be done up .
Firstly it needs washing / cleaning as its dusty/ dirty so what can I use to do this is soap liquid ok ?
Also there is a gap inbetween where it sticks to the wall to the skirting board , as if the adhesive / filler has gone - what do I use to fill this in with - is poly filla used ?

I shouldn't laugh,but is that a serious question,how to wash a skirting board :giggle:

Sugar soap to wash with, available most places. If the gap is large perhaps you could re-fix it rather than fill it. Otherwise a standard filler should be fine.

Oooo i've made a note of that,looks good,not seen it before:thumbsup:

If your paintwork is old or hasn't been painted for a while , it's best to just sand the woodwork . For gaps between the wood and the wall , use a flexible filler ..................the stuff in a tube ............ it's called CAULK ... it's overpaintable ................... DONT USE THE SILICONE STUFF . When sanding , dont take the paint off [ down to the wood ] or you'll have to prime the bare wood . Just 'KEY ' the surface . Any oil based undercoat will do , but use a decent quality gloss on top . Leave the undercoat to dry overnight before painting with Glossing .

replace with PVC skirting, no painting needed and doesnt fade

Thanks for all the replies and helpfull advise -
Do I have to sand the skirting down ? Its not to damaged and im doing it for a spruce up as Im painting the walls and thought the skirting could do with a freshening up with the same white paint as it is now ( but faded due to age) ?
I'm going to get the sugarsoap wash it down , leave to dry , then caulk it , leave to dry then just paint over it ...will this be ok ... ?

god your hard work.. sand to remove any flakes and old paint, you can leave the old paint there, your giving the new paint which you can paint over the top of the old paint a base to grip

or wood you like us to pop round and do it for you .. did you see what I did there:w00t:

im sure it would be easier to come and show you on your wood, then you only got to paint it, unless he would be kind enough to do that too
