thanks sweet...........whats one of them? :-D

nope, she has to have the card that is registered to the ACTUAL box.. this happened to me some time ago when i purchased a second hand sky+ box, but the card was the bog standard sky one i use already, but it didn't work in the other new box..

unless you wanna fork out for upgrading the package to sky+, there's no way around it unless you buy the box AND it's card..

It will work without an extra feed (you need to cables from the dish in the back of a Sky+ box, rather than one) but you'll only be able to record what you are watching.

Nope, she'll just need to phone Sky, and ask her to 'pair' her existing card with the new box.

its just the cable from the sky dish, as midlandscomics said its still usable with one line in, but you wont be able to use all of the features...

you will be using the same card, you cant give that away....as long as your mate has their own card should be ok (just a call to sky by them).

It will work (you have to insert your friends card in the Sky+ box then phone Sky and tell them you have a new box and "marry" it to your friends viewing card). They do this instantly with no charge (there is even a message comes up on the box with the phone number and instructions when your friend inserts the card). Withouth the second dish connection you will be able to watch everything but you will lose about 50% of your recordings because it will use the second cable which isnt connected (I sold my old Sky+ to a guy at work and this is how his is working)

If you can get an HD box with the new firmware from ebay for under £100 I think and these will allow you to specify that you only have 1 dish connection. Or Sky will come and upgrade a part on your dish and put a new cable on for maybe £50 - might not be worth the messing for this money

thanks everyone, let me clarify then

    1. Yes she can swap boxes
    2. Yes she can use her existing card and ring skyy to "marry" it to the new box
    3. She will need extra cable from box to dish to allow full use of all programmes.

one more question, can you buy the extra cable needed to connect to the sky dish, if so, where from and how much?
Her brother is really handy around the house, would he be able to do it?

yes possibly, dont need sky to do it any engineer....

you need a 4 line lnb + cable....

sky have loads of offers on at the moment might be worth checking.....

if she already subscribes she can get free sky+ or HD just £30 fiiting (+multiroom poss)

    depends on the area

Both Sky+ and Sky HD require two feeds from a dish to function properly, they both require a valid paid subscription to function fully.

You can swap boxes and use card - Sky CS will confirm this with a phone call if you are still unsure.

Yes you can buy the cable branded "twinsat", you will need a new LNB too. You can google these or pop into Maplin or somewhere (even if you get the details then buy online). Its all a very easy job if you are handy round the house.

Has your friend rang sky and asked for a sky+ box. they seem to be giving them away lately with most people switching to HD+ I'd suggest they do that first and tell them they're not happy with the fact new customers get such good deals. If they are in a location which they can get virgin+, sky will know that they can switch so will do a lot more to retain them

    4. She will need to replace the LNB on the dish if it only has one output, usually with a quad LNB with 4 outlets, however only 2 feeds are required.

no offers available in her area, the only offer they have available is

Sky+: Sky+ box £149 for existing Sky TV customers or £49 if you take a new Multiroom subscription. Existing customers need to sign up to another 12 month minimum term for Sky TV.
I know that she wont want the multi-room subscription so thats a potential £149 to shell out. I will get her to ring Sky and threaten with moving to Virgin and see waht they say.

SKY HD with the new EPG can work fine with one input if you change it in the menu.
