Sky+ Box Now recording without subscription

Sky boxes can now record without a sky channel subscription, previously £120 a year just enable recording.
So quite a saving. Still need a a sky card for it to work. Old sky boxes bound to go up in price now they can be used free as a pvr

did they get a firmware update or something?

Not as far as I know, as my box is not connected to the internet. They must have stop blocking unsubscribed boxes from the sat signal.

Good news if it works for everyone.

I received an email from sky a short while ago about this. I seem to remember that this option is not permanent.

Just tried my box but it comes up saying you need to upgrade your subscription when you hit record (it does have a viewing card)

I was previously paying to record. But it is now showing free for me. which drops my sub's to£16.50 for unlimited fibre, line rental and recording. Big thanks for the heads up op.

mine says o need to upgrade as well

where did you get your info from according to Sky this morning you still have to pay £10 a month to activate the box to enable recording, are you winding us up or is there a hack we do do not know!!

Could this be an existing customer offer ?

Sky + or sky hd+ as it's probably only Sky + ~(non hd models)

My sky+ HD box can still record after canceling multi room several years ago. The Sky engineer didnt believe me at first.

Thanks.

If this is true it will dramatically increase the value of Sky+ HD boxes (WiFi enabled or not) from around £25-30 to at least a hundred.

Firmware updates come over satellite. Just tried forcing a firmware update on mine, it made no difference though, recording is still blocked.

If they are re-enabling sky+ for all ex-customers on a card by card basis, I guess it may take some time. Of course they may just have re-enabled for some ex-customers in error, or giving sky broadband customers who dont have sky tv, freeview from sky for free.

nope doesn't work. OP can you confirm how you know?

If you've kept the old sky card (think it was blue with a yellow house on it) from when they sent out replacements some years ago, and you had sky+ at the time, then I gather using the old card in your sky +hd box should enable recording on non-encrypted channels, and as the cards are obsolete sky apparently don't send out the cancellation codes any more, so it should keep working.

Unfortunately, I didn't have sky + on mine :(. So I plan on salvaging the hard disk and scrapping the box once I get around to buying a freesat box.

I saw a post on DS and tried it, my box is now free to record. It seems it may be a glitch and only some unsubcribed boxes are working, with the lightlyhood being that Sky will close the "fault" shortly.

I think this only happened with a small percentage of boxes, for more info may be worth checking the DS forum

So can I clarify that if you cancel your sky subscription the sky box will still work and you can watch free view channels? Not so bothered about recording. Paying £30 a month at the moment for channels I don't watch!

Yes you can still view the free channels but no recording, pausing etc

I cancelled my subscription about 6 weeks ago and lost the recording/pause function. Then 3 nights ago, I noticed the red light had come on - it was recording a programme I used to have on series link. Since then the recording and pause functions are working again perfectly. I have no idea why. I expect it will disappear as quickly as it reappeared but at the moment I'm enjoying it!

does not work for me at all tried upgrad too and an old amstrad box

Thanks for keeping us posted!

This has happened to me, also. I cancelled the recording option a few months ago and then a few days I saw the red light and I called sky because I didn't want to get charged for something I never asked for. And sky being sky and their rubbish customer service, one of their advisors says it's totally free for six months and then I checked my bill for the next few months on my account and it's an extra ten pound so I asked them to cancel because I didn't ask for it and they apologised for it and said its a mistake from their side. I called again today and they said it takes up to thirty days for it to cancel.

This is all looking a little unlikely then I'm guessing.

Sticking to the humax.

i got BT unlimited fibre, line rental and calls for £3.83 a month after cashback and prepaid card. £27.99 per month less £178 TCB and £100 prepaid MasterCard. Not sure if offer still running.

My old Sky HD box is working on record with a very old dark blue sky card in it, the only thing it wont do is record a series and it obviously wont work on sky subscription channels.

My sky subscription expired on friday. Can't pause or record now.

If you had sky+ when they replaced all the cards, and didn't throw out the old sky card, which was blue with a yellow house on it, try using that instead of your latest card, as record shouldn't be deactivated on it. (You might want to disconnect the hd box from the net and phonelines first)
