    Sky (freesat) question

Lots of knowledgeable people on here so thought I'd ask...

Just moved into a new house which has a satellite dish up on the wall outside. There's two coaxil cables running in from the dish which have 'bskyb' printed on them.

One of these cables has an end connector on it, the other just has a chopped end.

Can I just plug the end with the connector on into a sky box and get regular freesat? Or do I have to buy a particular 'freesat' box?

Also what's the other cable for?

    Ta!

the old people had sky plus

    2 cables = Sky+

And your sky box should work fine with one of the cables.

Yup you'll get Free to Air. Freesat is if you have a Freesat from Sky card or a BBC/ITV Freesat Box

Check the gadget on the end of the dish , called the LNB .Some are singles [one feed] ,others have 2 [twin ] , some are quads.Just means you can run 2 sky boxes if you have 2 cables coming from the dish , or you could have a SKY box in one room and a Freesat box in another . ie one boxe per cable. Sometimes you may need a card from Sky to view the free channels [FTV] .There £19.59 from SKY . I've just ordered a one from them as someones given me a SKY box ,I bought a Zone 2 dish today and I thought I'd try out their channels .
Remember Sky Free To View is different from FreeSat . Freesat boxes can be bought from Argos quite cheaply ,but they both get the feed from the same set of satellites @ 28.2 degrees ,so you can use a Sky dish for both.hth

Awesome.. What's the different between Sky Free to View and Freesat?

Freesat has Five, Fiver (+1), Five US (+1), Sky 3 and the correct regional settings

Freesat is a joint effort between ITV & the BBC giving about 140 channels .There is 2 types available ,a SD box [Standard Definition] for about £49.00 and a HD box [High Definition] for about £68.00 [both from somewhere like Argos]. Once you've bought your kit ,there's nothing more to pay.
Sky [FTV] I believe has 250 channels , I will confirm this as soon as I get my dish stuck on the wall :-)
Some say you can get the SKY channels free ,but they do a FTV card for just under £20 , so I think without a card , you may not get all the channels.
This FTV card may last 3 or 4 years ,depending on when they issue a new card.

i have sky multi room as it is, if i upgrade to hd, and still have the original box how do i get a freeview card for it, and would it work if got one anyhow. thx peopls

Get a Freesat card from [url]www.sky.com/replacecard[/url] Click on Get a Card and Don't Have a Viewing Card Number. You'll get it then you'll need to give someone like me a phone to activate it ;-)

I was looking at purchasing a 4 way LNB as I heard you can link another box to the dish in another room and view seperate channels, but wouldn't you need an additional sky viewing card? If so, how is it possible to get another one of those? Is there any truth in this?!

I've just fitted a quad today for a customer who already has the SKY FTV card . She bought a HD Freesat box and I've set it up today .Very impressive , picture quality is rather good especially on the BBC HD preview channel .She now wants a SD box in another room .
@woz are you subscribing to SKY or are you wanting the FTV channels ?
With a quad LNB you can have up to 4 separate boxes giving you separate channels . So ,for instance you can have a SKY subscription in one room ,a FVT card and box in another and a Freesat box in another room or two .
Freesat boxes are only about £50 , [SD] £67 for HD , or you can pick up a cheap SKY box on the bay . I sold one last year for a mate and only got £6.00 for it .Wished I'd kept it now . I was given a Pace model for free just the other week .I'm now going to use that with my FTV card that came this morning .

    Hey Ricko,
Yes I do subscribe to Sky. Ideally I wanted to fit this Quad LNB to my dish and just watch the channels I have in my lounge in my kitchen, i.e. Sky 1 in the lounge, MTV in the kitchen etc. Is it at all possible without a multi room subscription? Would I need a 2nd card in order for the other sky box (I have a spare sky box)

Really dont want to pay £10 a month just to watch channels I have already paid for, the room is like 10 yards a way!

I dont really know much about SKY as I've never had it . My satellite system ,I've had for about 14 years is the Eurosat system ,it doesn't pick up the UK or SKY channels . I dont think you can run a SKY box in another room with another card though and as you know ,you would have to pay .You could however run a non SKY box as long as you fitted a quad LNB . Other boxes could be a SD Freesat or a HD Freesat or even for that matter another SKY box with a £20 FTV card , this would give you the freebies .
