Sky Q

I rang Sky a couple of months back as I’m a VIP member and saw they were offering a cheaper installation cost to upgrade from a HD box to Q. However, when I said we only needed the main box (as we only have one TV), I was told installation would be £200.

Same offer is still on - is this advice consistent with what others have heard or should I go back to them?

£200 installation??
Also had the same with my mother’s account, they been a sky customer for 19yrs and they won’t budge on installation cost, rang 4 different times and got through to their cancellation dept, still no joy.

however when I got Q around 3 years go I managed to get free install on mine.

They said on the phone that the boxes are state of the art and are expensive so hence the large up front cost, however they didn’t know what to say when I told them I wasn’t purchasing the box as it legally belongs to them so why am I being charged to purchase it then? They didn’t know what to say....

bunch of sharks.

Ever tried getting a fish up a ladder to change the external LNB as required for the Q boxes?

Customers with a track record of paying will continue to be charged! [through the nose!]. This is their bread & butter! No charity case! New customer offers will always be better than loyalty offers! Loyalty doesn't pay!!

You'll need to swap the lnb back to the older one

Interesting I am going to cancel my sky q contract didn’t realise about the LNB see they are easily available do you know if you can fit them yourself
I have a Sky Q box and don’t see what’s so good about it?

I’m not that bothered but the HD box freezes fairly regularly and has to be reset: I was told if it needed an engineer visit, it’ll cost around £60... 😬
Cancel, and get a new customer deal.
Enjoy the new customer offers, and £10 installation from what I remember.

I've been with sky and virgin had all their boxes and can say sky q is easily the best. It's down to preference I'll agree, but there's no way I'd stump up £200 to get it installed

I agree. Unfortunately I extended our contract by putting the HD channels on. Just can’t get my head round an offer where I pay £40 to install two boxes, but £200 to install only one...I’m happy to pay installation, just not that amount!

Ah well, stick to the HD box until it dies I guess.

Maybe a silly question. Couldn't you get 2 boxes installed then have a change of mind and return one? Or even act dumb when the engineer arrives and tell him there's been a confusion you only wanted one box installed

D’you think that’ll work?
With the VIP offer it requires you to take 'Sky Q Experience' (multi-room) at £13 per month and its this that makes the installation price go to what the VIP offer is.

I think the VIP offer is on the 2TB box, have you tried asking about the upfront cost of the new 1TB UHD box they launched a few weeks ago?

I wouldn't act dumb at the stage of the installer fitting it, they have no ability to remove things off your package (Q Experience) and will probably just insist on leaving the 2nd box with you then you call customer services to get have that conversation.

Plenty of hd+ boxes on ebay and car boots for 10 to 15 quid if your happy to stick with it
.... Or get put through to retentions and say your leaving as you are paying too much, and that as a loyal customer you get penalised when you want to upgrade to something that everyone else gets cheaper. My FiL got a Q upgrade for £20 and only has 1 TV.

Thanks as always everyone - I’ve usually been fairly successful getting discounts from Sky but this is proving to be a tougher nut to crack! I did ask about the 1TB box (more than enough for our needs) but will go back and ask again 🏻
I've also found sometimes waiting until the beginning/mid-month helps - I often wonder if commision for sales/retentions are done on a calendar month and as such they've hit targets by this point in month and so dont have to do 'hard sales' etc.
I’ve never ever know installation being £200!! Unless your a specialist location
Sky will fleece you unless you have other options. To get good deals from sky you need to be out of contract and there are other alternatives like virgin media. As you are in contract and your box is faulty, they know that you are tied in with them.

This is the price via My Sky without the Sky Q experience (goes down to £20 installation if I take the experience)

Get yourself another box off ebay / gumtree etc and swap it over yourself, pair your card to the box and job done for less than half that call out, that way you can rule out your box being faulty at least - or solve your problem
