SKY +/Sky HD, Broadband, Telephone the lot - New/Exisitng Customer - Advice Required Please ??

Found 11th Jun 2009
Hi all,

Currently got Sky + and the 8mb Broadband with Sky but im moving home at the end of July to a new build property.

i have called Sky this evening and was advised that Sky HD takes around 2 weeks installation time at the moment and Sky + within 7 days.

As the property does not have an active BT phone line, the cheapest option regarding set up fees and long term fees will be to go with Sky Talk and also take their Broadband offer out too.

The sale rep i spoke to advised that Sky Talk new installs takes about 6 weeks and cost £25 set up fee and the Broadband will be set up approx 3 weeks after that.

As you can imagine, the thought of been without the "internet" for a few months seems crazy in this "day n age"

The Sale rep said i am unable to pre order it all as im not currently in the property and I would have to call back once i have moved in which seems a bit of a joke if im prepared to pay in advance and arranged a future install date.

My next question is, as "im" a existing customer, do you think i would be best/ get the best deal getting it transferred over or signing up as my other half at the new address where there will be no trace of pre- existing customer??

Does any one have any advice with this one??

Much appreciated

Rick

Are you still within your 1 year contractual period?
SkyHD two weeks is crud, I ordered SkyHD for my parents earlier this week they are getting it next Tuesday, 7/8day lead time.

If Sky Talk offer no BT Line Installation (assuming it is 100% needed, sure it doesn't have a dead line running into it???) then I'd grab it.

2 Weeks for Sky Talk makes sense
3 weeks for broadband can make sense depending on how awfully incompetent Easynet/Sky LLU is being.

My suggestion no net in the mean time get a mobile solution, the expansys £17 for £30 three credit seemed good, £5/m = 6months of mobile broadband.

Thee problem with preordering everything at customer service level they have no idea what length the trunking line is, exactly which exchange your house is connected to, it's like trying to predict the weather while blind and deaf.

If you are within your contractual period (when did you last order Sky/renew your sky???) then you kind of have to take this up without losing money really, if you are not inside that contractual period you can just cancel and start anew.

Thanks for the advice,

I am in no contract with Sky, had it for around 4 years now so the 12 month has expired and i have not taken out any addtional contracts on broadband etc..

Mobile broadband is really not an option to be honest, seems like a bit too much hassle to get it working as i would require.

The new house phone line will be dead, as its a brand new house, so will require configuring.

I guess the best bet is to give them a call a bit closer to the time and see what i can do and what offers are on?

1st, call Sky, cancel everything at a date that is convienent to you.

2nd, Call BT go through to sales 0800 150150 and demand confirmation that they have a dead line (ie a copper pair ducted/poled to your new property) hooked up to your new house, this will waiver the £125 new BT line installation charge as all they have to do is activate the dead one, do something at the exchange and assign a number to it. An engineer will probably still come out but no installation should be needed, again assign a date that suits you. There are some ISPs that offer a new line + internet service but I wouldn't trust them regarding no installation fee issue.

Without mobile broadband, borrowing someones wifi, or overlapping your old place with your new place by say 2-4weeks, it is virtually guaranteed you will have no internet when you move.
Because assuming BT set it all up the day after you move in, you will still need 7-14daysish, depending on ISP to activate your new ISP, which is why the overlap is disireable if you really want no internet interupption at all.

Thanks, but no Virgin Media on the street......... which seems really daft as its a brand new development, so you would think Virgin would lay the cables.... (theres cable going down the main road around 300 meters away!)
