Slate tiles look amazing but if you have small kids i would avoid, cos very slippy and hard when wet. Wood floor looks good and is warmer. Only my personal opinion but hey

Slate would be very cold imo, we have solid wood (oak) floors and would definitely recommend

do you have to polish the floor often

No need to polish often, you can get a purpose cleaner for the wood which should keep it looking nice.

We have solid oak flooring downstairs. It does mark, especially if you have kids or animals in the house. There is a thin layer of lacquer on it, and it scratches easily. That said, if you're not too bothered by that, and don't examine your floor all the time, you can live with it.

We clean it using a slightly damp mop, with no detergent. Once a while we use a specialist cleaner to coat it and give it a higher shine.

Slate is nice, but getting it level is tricky - also if you drop anything on it...

We were going to go for solid oak flooring in our new house but were told that it can turn black near doorways due to wear and damp, also easily scratched so renovation is needed. In the end we went for Karndean which also works well with our underfloor heating, timber would have insulated the heat too much , karndean website

Slate will also require a good sub floor, the wood flooring is a bit more tolerant.
Slate is hard, cold and requires regular maintenance to prevent it looking shabby but will last for ever.
Wood is warmer but will damage easier especially the high heels. There is a major difference as well between true wood floor and laminates, wood flooring will allow you to sand back and bring the floor back to new but laminates less so and the cheap laminates not at all as there is no wood.

Karndean is a vinyl flooring so is very hard wearing and is used in commercial situations such as shops and supermarkets, you can spill a glass of wine on it and just mop it up, and if the dishwasher/washing machine leaks or floods there is no damage
