    Small 4 wheel drive cars

I need a new car. I can't drive anything big (I am not a good driver). Please can anyone tell me what the smallest 4 wheel drive cars are? Thanks very much

Why does it have to be a 4 wheel drive.

Why do need a 4 wheel drive.

up a hill - semi rural - incapable of getting kids to school in the snow - happened 3 times now. Have had to get friends to take them in 4 wheel drive so if I am buying a car may as well ensure I can get kids to school in future

Suzuki Jimny or Daihatsu Terios if you're after a more traditional jeep-type 4X4. Both quite small and 1300cc engines

I think the Fiat 500 has a 4x4 option too though.

Take some driving lessons, money well spent I would suggest.;-)

To be honest i would have thought 4 wheel drive would be pretty useless in a small (light) car

I would have thought it would be too light even if all wheels are driven.

I could be wrong though, just my thoughts.

Maybe worth checking out before parting with a big wedge.

A 4 wheel drive car doesn't stop any better than a 2 wheel drive car, as many discovered recently.

If you're not after a new one, Suzuki Vitaras are great.

Wrong time of year to be looking for one if you're on a budget though, the majority of second-hand 4x4s are hugely overpriced with it being winter.

I would agree, but I seem to remember you can get something that you just slip over ur wheels to make sure u don't have to keep changing the wheels

Don't think the CR-Vs are that small, are they? They're great cars though.

    which happens how often?

the snow we experienced this year will most likely not be repeated for another 5-10 years

A Honda Jazz is most definitely not a 4x4

And a CRV will be huge in comparison

I know! Hence the hesitation. Like the jazz a lot but then realised I would still be dependant on others next time we have bad weather - which will probably be within the next month

Were they the Range Rover sort of size though?

You answered that one yourself They're betting for getting up hills etc...... but they're no better at stopping if you hit ice/snow etc. You've just got to take it easy when slowing down

Size wise there's a huge difference between a Jimny and a CR-V. What do you drive at the moment?

Good point. Need to be able to get up hills though. I drive a polo 1.4 - hence my reticence at going to too big

You already admit you dont drive well - why endanger other road-users with a 4x4 for the sake of 2 weeks worth of snow every 5 years?

Don't you and your kids have legs?, I used to walk to school, about 2 miles each way.

    Never did me any harm.

Rumour has it, walking is actually good for you.

??? show us the money. What are you wagering a red button?

We have had about 2-3 weeks worth (at least here) in the last 6 weeks. Do you live somewhere warmer then the rest of us?

No they are 4 and 5 so I don't want them walking 4 miles (our journey) in 8 inches of snow..Where we live 100s of cars were abandoned as they all got stuck.

Thanks for the helpful suggestion though.

I live in Mid Wales, & I don't drive a 4x4. In spite of all the bad weather we had I was able to drive where I wanted (including up & down mountain roads), as long as the roads were open.

The skill in keeping your car going (regardless of the weather) is very much down to your driving ability, and not what you're driving. By your own admission you're not a very good driver - driving a 4x4 won't make you any better, & it won't mean that you'll be able to cope with driving in snow.

A 4x4 can make things easier, but only if you can apply the capabilities of yourself & your car in a way that suits the conditions.
