Me and my friend were just talking about how awkward some conversations can be with people and how you have nothing to say to them but to be polite you start a conversation anyway.
I've always hated smalltalk, what's the point of it? I'm sure nobody enjoys it so why do we do it??

just think, if you didnt start off with small talk with your friend then you probably be wouldn't be friends, some great friendships are made from the little awkward conversations, well for me they are

I think it's a British thing to be honest ! Don't like to be seen as ignorant, arrogant, rude and such like, therefore go around talking to random people about random stuff because it's just what we do ! No rhyme or reason really, just life !
And how would you ever meet anyone (partners, friends etc) if you didn't do smalltalk ?

Here is a very funny sketch from Armstrong and Miller about the origin of smalltalk

the better you are at small talk the luckier you will be when you look for partners plus it gets you in with people at work...

there's a guy at my work who always asks the same three questions every week. how are you? when are you in to? who are you working with today? i always give the same answers, and he still asks. has done for two years!!:x:x

That's not smalltalk - that's just plain irritating :whistling:

you would get bored of having big in depth conversations all the time!!! Would you rather people were rude and didnt talk at all!?!?

this is so true... sometimes when I'm coming home from a long day at work a bit of smalltalk with a random person on the train brightens my day up! but obviously I dont try to talk to anyone... only people I can see that would like to talk!

yeah i wouldn't just randomly go up to someone and make small talk either but take this morning for example...i walked from the multi story car park to my place of work with someone that works on the same floor as me and we made small talk...whats the other option? both walk in silence and thinking how rude and ignorant each other are?

Great topic. Linguists refer to 'small talk' as 'phatic communion'. There has been a lot of work discussing its functions and purposes. Google Bronislaw Malinowski - he was the anthropologist who coined the term...

:giggle: you make me laugh sometimes star

I don't mind small talk at all and prefer it to awkward silences. Living in a small village it happens constantly

:lazy: small talk is for small people without any ideas

your just one of those ignorant people then!
Small talk is a stepping stone to bigger and better conversations. After all how would you get talking to people when your out and about. You can't just walk up to someone in a bar and say, so what are your thoughts on jesus?..or whats your theory on the big bang, or what do you think or the current economic climate?

As for small talk...well your post was rather short. Didn't manage to expand there did you!

;-) Woof Woof

you have to start somewhere!

Didnt see that one wee man...:? Who you been noising up this time??

I found the best place for smalltalk was in liverpool at the Gum Clinic ......

we were talking after a nervous few mins . the ice breaker came everytime someone hobbled out of one of the rooms after people looked around at others ....talk developed from there ..

Surprisingly though no one asked how we were or anything .....think that was self evident :whistling:
