Smoking whilst driving...what is the law?

I'm not a smoker but I just wondered!

Probably your catalytic convertor...as long as you don't get caught you will be alright.

Covered under Road Traffic Act - you must not drive without due care and attention. That covers pretty much everything that isnt covered separately like mobile phones etc.

so yeah, you can smoke, but it may affect your attention to driving and maintaining control of your vehicle, and if so then you'll be prosecuted under the above act and section covering it.

A few weeks ago, a woman here in Edinburgh was driving on the way into work at 6am when her car veered off-road and collided with a tree. Emergency services had to cut her out of the wreck.

See if you can guess what she was doing at the time.

id hazard a guess at that she was bleeding pretty heavily and screaming and crying....

I'm a smoker, but smoking while driving is a big no no for me, theres nothing worse than going 60 when you drop a hot ciggy in your lap, especially when wearing shorts, trust me a burnt nad is very painful and very distracting.

Heh, no. She was actually relatively unharmed, which I think says impressive things about the design of modern vehicles.

oh so there was no blood or tears...... after she has colided with a tree and had to be cut out of the vehicle by the emergency services possibly using the "jaws of life"

    source?

I personally think it should've been banned before using the phone at the wheel was!!!
    It's a lot more dangerous.
As has been said, what are you gonna do if you're doing 70mph n you drop your fag in your lap!!!
Unbelievable that it hasn't been outlined and banned like mobiles have.

Ah but if all smokers were prevented from smoking while driving and it was made a points offence, probably end up with a lot less drivers on the road. Cutting driver numbers would also possibly have a downward affect on number of accidents
    oooh dodgy territory :w00t:

One of my mates is banned from driving for doing exactly that, dropped his lit ciggie at speed, reached down to get it, veered off into a lorry of frozen chickens! Needless to say the lorry came off worse than the 1992 Ford Escort.. :whistling:

One the down side, he was banned for quite a while with a fairly big bill too.

I was following a girl yesterday obviously messing around with her mobile phone driving at 40 then 50 then 40, she turned right to my relief then I looked in the rear view mirror to see a dwarf driving a micra swerving dangerously back onto his side of the road narrowly missing another car. I'd love to be a traffic cop grrr

    I rest my case!!

Smoking whilst driving...what is the law?

the question should be ' smoking whilst pushing a pushchair.....whats the law?' :whistling:

As smokers are more of a risk on the road then I think they should pay a far higher premium than non-smokers :whistling:

Who are all these smokers who drop their cigarettes?

I've been a smoker for a while and I don't think i've ever dropped a cigarrette, apart from while drunk and would obviously not be driving anyway.

    I agree totally with Jumpingphil.
