Software to limit kids machines access to internet?

Banned
I'm looking for software to control the kids access to the internet.

What I need is something that will control various parameters:

Time allowed online
Time allowed to specific websites (ie still have access elsewhere - but limit individual sites time access)
Completely block access to some sites - or child unfriendly sites
Control network access (ie internal)
Set the limits by physical times - not just number of hours / minutes.

I've seen several that come close, but not found one that meet all those criteria.

Just need something that means I can can control specific machines rather than using the router method I'm currently using - which is limited on its control - and blocks me at the same time!

I would imagine someone already has something like this - so any info appreciated.

Ta.

if you have windows vista, you have full parental control which includes all you've mentioned.

Cheers. I'll admit I hadn't realised that - but unfortunately its an XP machine. (I realise I should have said that!!)

Have you taken a look at Net Nanny? … Have you taken a look at Net Nanny? http://www.netnanny.com/products/netnanny_home_suite

Net nanny is more a guardian for child friendly sites than time control functions. (From what I read anyway!)

The two sites specifically I want to limit access to are youtube and roblox - which I dont mind the kids using - just not 24/7 like they would do if they had the chance!

Does your router (if you use one) have parental controls on it? A 2wire 2700 router allows you to set the times each PC can access the internet, and what content is allowed.

not wishing to appear rude but can you not just tell them not to be on these sites for such a long time? ours have a time limit for the net, gaming etc, if they abuse it.....they lose it.

i would liek to limit msn-is there a program for that? the only one i can find is the off switch..lol

Its far easier to set limits which are rigid and they know the boundaries. Besides, I am not in their rooms 24/7 to know they are online or working within acceptable perameters.

I see, mine do not have access in their own rooms, internet access has been limited to the living areas.

My router does have a CP, but it doesnt give timed access limits. It does however allow me to block sites, which I have been using. However, that only works across the network - and bans me also! So each time I want to click a youtube vid, I have to access the CP. This is what has brought this up - I forgot to reset it - and he now has access that was being denied!

I'm trying to set this so it becomes a reward - not a punishment!

The Network is hard wired in all bedrooms, living room (HTPC) and my computer room. Plus wireless where ever on the laptops. I'm trying to make it a reward rather than a punishment! The eldest is autistic. He would respond much better to that situation. The missus has found him on the machine first thing in the morning after I have gone to work, but before school. He wouldnt have a problem with "access denied", but would being told "switch it off now". It's all about knowing the best solution without causing mayhem!

if this works for you then that is brilliant, as you know how your son responds to different situations. i have found this parental control for XP. windows-help-central.com/par…tml and hope it helps. When our eldest son had his own laptop we actually had the modem on a plug-in timer (set to switch off from 12:30 am until 8:30am) as he was 16, doing exams and talking on MSN till all hours! Our other 2 sons respond verbally much better than he did, although as they get older I know this may change!

Thanks for that. Just had a quick read. Looks like you can block access - but it is the number of hours / physical time thats missing - Unless I misread it! (And often do!) I'll delve deeper as you do mention modem limits....I just didnt see that!

Cheers for that again.

Unfortunately I am really looking for a software solution. And the disadvantage for me with this modem, is that it doesnt appear to be ADSL2 (at least no mention!) so it would cut my speed by over half! I wouldnt get my current 16.5Mb connection - which wouldnt be too much fun!:p

The netgear 834 i have has extensive parental controls including scheduling, do check out if there are any other updated firmwares available for your router that may include these.

Good point!

I just checked and there is a firmware update for my Speedtouch 716.

Dont think it touches on these things (from what I read), but worth flashing it anyway!
