SOLVED: Options for sound with an Xbox 360 hooked up to a monitor?

Xbox is now hooked up to a 22" monitor using the VGA cable. That cable has two phono (RCA) leads coming off it, red and white but no inputs in the monitor so need to connect to external speakers. I have a set of 2.1 speakers with a 3.5mm stereo output but if I got an adaptor and used them I would lose the ability to plug in headphones, right?

Can anyone tell me the options available and/or what they would do? (Thanks - I am so carp with tech issues).

You've said the 3.5mm is an input so it can't be used with headphones anyway, it would have to be an output.

I use an adapter and it sounds fine

 meant to say 'output' in that case! Will change that now. (Told you I was useless with these things)

EDIT: but that still doesn't solve the headphones issue...

thats the sort of thing you need, I use one of those to connect my PC soundcard to my hi-fi, works pretty well although you do have to turn the volume up a bit more (probably due to a long, cheap cable TBH!)

anywhere! The point is that if I use this connector to get sound using the adaptor above I will have to use the headphones output, thus losing the possibility of using headphones in it...

some confusion here, take the two items separately,

1 that adapter is to put sound from xbox to tv, yes?
if so you're tv has a 3.5mm sound input ?, the socket next to the pc vga in will most likely be sound "in",,, any headphone socket is a sound "output"

2 you want to listen to what on headphones? the TV?
It should have a separate headphone socket,

The confusion is probably because I'm not using a TV but a monitor, and I want to get sound by using external pc speakers. I wouldn't have a problem if I was hooking it up to a TV. It's in the title!

doesn't really make any diff whatever you put the sound to it has to have a headphone out on it as well as sound in, otherwise its cable swapping

Hold up mate, crossed wires here I think ()

If you have a 3.5mm jack on the back of the speakers (usually where you would connect them to the PC) stick the 3.5mm jack end of the adaptor cable in to that and bobs your mothers brother. If you plug the adaptor cable in to the headphones output socket on the speakers it WILL NOT work!

thanks Chris - I was thinking that I might have been confused - and I am! Ok, that solves the 'crossed wires' above. I've been blindly thinking that the headphones socket would do the trick even tho logic told me it couldn't. Damn, time to start thinking again as the speakers I was thinking of don't have a 3.5mm connector on the back... oh hell, what do I do now? Invest in new speakers or find another solution?

and I've already ordered the connector from amazon and it was posted today using my prime delivery trial!
