# Some help please .... can someone explain the model scales for a remote control car, eg: 1:16

Ok so i have seen a radio control car that i want to get for my nephew.. Link below.

It says its 1:16 and i have seen a similar one on another site but its 1:10 - Which one would be bigger.

I want a decent sized car but i just cant work out or imagine what the 1:16 will look like, can anyone compare it to an item so i can try to imagine how big/small it will be?

Thanks - Dont want to order and it be the same size as a matchbox! lol

1:10 means than 1 inch of the toy car is equivalent to 10 inches of the real car

so if the real car if 12 foot long, the toy car would be 12 inches long

i think thats right anyway - if not sorry!!

I don't know anything about models, sorry.

I just wondered what time you are doing the race for life.

Me and my friend are booked in for 2.30pm on the sunday at HP

Personally, I find it hard to visualise these things just in mind, so I use a measuring tape and sheets of paper to give me an impression of how big it'll be. 'Tis maybe worth a try.

Would actually be 14.4 inches long lol.

Not quite right as you are assuming base 10, where inches and feet is imperial and doesn't quite work like that.

12 feet = 144 inches so a scale model of a 12 foot car 1:10 would be 14 and 2/5 " long (darn Broxy beat me to it, although a decimal in an inches measurement is not the norm either, fractions are used, I think)

Think of the number on the left hand side of the ratio as the sacale size and the right hand side as the real life. Lower the right hand side number the bigger the model (assuming the left hand side stays as 1)

Can someone maybe just tell me if the car in the link above is decent... is it a crappy little cheapo one? Or will it be a decent size....

DLM:

Im doing the 11am one on Sun 11th. Good Luck. Might see you around, its my first time doing it so not sure what the procedure is. My fella wants to come along and watch but i have no idea if he can come along and wait at the side lol - I dont even know where the race is going to be within Heaton Park.

I don't know anything either but thankfully my friend has done it before

No, it's all relative. The 1:10 model is probably bigger. It's one tenth the size of the original, rather than one sixteenth. Which is bigger depends on how big the original is.

Off the top of my head, a matchbox car is around 1:60 to 1:70, a 1:18 car it the standard size for larger model cars - I'd say a 1:16 car is going to be around 80% of the length of a standard qwerty keyboard and numpad but that's very rough.
