A BABY boy was fighting for life last night after he was accidentally shot in the head by his five-year-old sister.
Rashid Rullah, 18 months, was critically ill with a pellet from a .22 air rifle in his skull.

Little Rashid was shot after his dad put his air rifle down to answer the phone.

Rashid's older sister Asna Almas picked up the weapon and pulled the trigger as the youngsters played in their back garden.

A .22 pellet hit Rashid in the back of the head — and the tot was rushed to hospital.

Doctors last night described his condition as “critical but stable”. His parents were at his bedside.

The kids’ grandfather Bakht Rammand told how the accident happened while their dad Bakht Zaman had his back turned.

Grandad Bakht, 48, said: “The children were playing with their father in the garden and he had been doing target practice with the gun.

“He had been cleaning it but put it down when his mobile phone rang and he went to answer it.

“Rashid’s sister picked it up and accidentally pulled the trigger. His sister is a very active child, it all happened so quickly. It was a terrible accident and we are hoping and praying he recovers. He is my life.”

Mum Fazeat, 25, was in the kitchen while her hubby, a 29-year-old handyman, played with the kids in Washwood Heath, Birmingham.

Grandad Bakht said doctors at Birmingham Children’s Hospital were keeping Rashid sedated to stop him moving around while the pellet was still in his head.

He added: “It’s too early to say what will happen. The whole street loves Rashid. His mother is in shock. I didn’t like my son keeping the gun anywhere near the children. I’ll make sure he never has guns again.”

Neighbours confirmed the dad had been firing at a target in his garden.

Robert Stacey, 50, said: “I asked him if he was with a club and he said he was.

“I wasn’t very happy at this going on next door because it made a loud noise and I don’t like having guns so nearby.”

Another neighbour added: “It’s terrible. You shouldn’t have guns around young children.”

Police were investigating Sunday’s accident.

Laws on airguns were tightened in 2007. Only registered dealers can sell them, and it is illegal to sell to under-18s. Most do not need a firearms certificate, but it is illegal to carry one in public.

Lol

He left a 5 year old and an 18 month old baby unattended with a GUN I will judge him on that and certainly wouldn't let him look after my daughter

Hopefully the baby is alright, if not I hope the dad gets sent down for manslaughter

The same as hitting someone in your car when your drunk, they don't mean to do it ether, they know the consequences when they get behind the wheel.

This bloke would have knew leaving a loaded gun with a 5 year old is pretty dangerous

In a time of gun culture and knife culture anyway he shouldn't be promoting guns to children anyway

And yeah take his kids away from him and don't let him anywhere near mine

Going by the soung of this, the mcanns should be put down as well, cause they be downright stupid as well.

I'd like to point out it was an air rifle and not a real gun.

Thank you for your Observation.

No ones quite sure what happened there though they say one thing other people say a different thing, it would be wrong of me to judge, whereas with this bloke his family have admitted what happened

A gun is a gun, you can still kill someone firing blanks and an air rifle is more dangerous than a gun firing blanks

air rifle = not a real gun ??

sword = not a real knife:thinking::thinking:

the baby was shot may have only been a pellet - on a baby equivalent to a bullet

And another;

12 year old this time

Police highlighted the danger of air rifles yesterday after a boy aged 12 … Police highlighted the danger of air rifles yesterday after a boy aged 12 was shot through the eye and killed while playing with a friend.Relatives were comforting the family of the pupil at Northcliffe school in Conisbrough, South Yorkshire, after he died in hospital following the incident at his home.

I feel sorry for the daughter who shot him, she will live with the guilt for her whole life if he dies or doesn't get 100% better. She is too young to know what she did, but as she grows up she will realise.
The father is an idiot for leaving the gun out, but it is a legal item to own - possibly lulling people into a false sense of security and making people believe it cannot cause much harm - and mistakes do unfortunately happen. A tragedy, and the family will be in turmoil, no need to make them feel any worse than they already do, they will have learnt their lesson and so will others be reminded of the damage these airguns can cause.

you could kill a baby with a butter knife...do you wanna get them all removed from the house!!!!!!

If any of you ppl can honestly say you have never made a mistake then fair enough but we all have lay off the poor guy that you dont even know....you dnt no ANYTHING about what happened all you are doing is reading a story in a TABLOID newspaper!!

i didnt mean for parents to be put down - i have a certain sympathy with this babies parents and the mc canns - even though it was their 'stupid - thoughtlessness that lead to these tragedies - end of the day the parents have to live with the guilt - life sentence

So, how is the baby going to simultaneously be alright, and be brought up without a dad? I can't see much future for the child other than being brought up by a single mother living on benefits if you get your wish and he is sent away. How is being brought up by a single mother on benefits a better way for a child to start its life than in a secure and full family environment, with a father who can bring home lots of money each week so that the mother needn't stress about finances, and that everyone can afford to live a little more healthily?

I'm getting the impression that you have very little true goodwill in you. It was an accident. Can you not see that?

I do...........but you obviously don't as it was in there as well. And they were a lot more judgemental.

Homework next time would help your argument.

Granted the kids parents made a mistake, but a pretty massive one which could result in the death of a baby. I think it's ok to judge the parents by this mistake.

hello? it's not about intellectual reading. it's about BEING STUPID enough -- why the hell would you leave a loaded air rifle gun nearby kids. should the blame be on the mobile phone then? your logic is nonsense.

FACTS: baby is fighting for life, as a result from a shot pellet from loaded gun.

Sorry your forgetting the fact that he has been shot in the head, I would be very surprised if putting it bluntly the child is all there mentally

The chances of the baby having a full recovery are going to be very slim

Maybe it's the fact that I used to be in the military and so I know what a gun can do that makes me so opinionated on it, I thought though everyone would have a similar point of view i.e. leaving a 5 year old with a gun is a big no no

I know people who was bought up with a single mother on benefits, they have had no problems in life and you will be surprised at some of the jobs they do

Hope the little one pulls through..................I'm sure the babys father is living with his guilt already (we all make mistakes some are bigger than others)

It would actually be quite tricky to accidentally kill someone with a butter knife. A responsible parent assesses risks and puts their children first. It is inexplicable to me why a parent would even have an airgun in the house let alone be practising in the back garden and god forbid that any one would actually be using a loaded rifle when their own children are present. This is nothing to do with tabloid journalism - it has been on the BBC and in the broadsheets etc. Or as kippy has so succintly put it :

This guy who left the gun surely did'nt want this to happen and will have to live with the guilt of this for the rest of his life. I believe it was a moment of madness that the loaded gun was left unattended but he would'nt have expected one child to shoot the other. I think it was a genuine HUGE mistake but why should people vilify him im sure he's putting himself through enough pain anyway.

lock him up and take away the kids

I don't think it's so much vilifying him personally; we can all understand the devastation he must feel. However the enormous stupidity of his actions makes me gasp in horror. There are human errors all the time, we all make them but this one is very very difficult to understand. How does a father leave a loaded rifle with his two very young children. What do children of that age do? They play with toys, They do not understand the associated dangers. The parent was negligent. We are horrified at the situation.

Hardly the worlds best hardly if he leaves a loaded gun lying round unattanded near his children.

So if you don't mean something to happen, does that make it ok? What about someone driving at 140 miles an hour down a motorway that causes a 10 car pile up and leaves 3 people dead, would that be ok because he didn't mean it to happen?
How about some kids throw a firework at someone and it blinds them, ok as they just meant to scare the blinded person?

You are silly and ignorant, and the source of this story is irrelevant. I assume you don't have kids - wait, I don't have kids, but I can sure as hell see the difference between an 'accident' and this kind of brainless disregard for the safety of children.

As a repsonsible parent, you'd think it wise not to leave an air rifle, knife, razor blade, hotukdeals.com or any other 'potentially harmful' object near your children.

A guy is messing around with an airgun next to his x month old baby and five year old kid. Is that responsible behavoir for a parent?

Accidents happen, but this is an accident caused by stupidity, a complete jack of judgement and a downright inablity to do a job as a parent.

.22 rounds can easily be lethal, they have a nasty habit of not being that powerful, so a shot to the head may peirce the skull, but not have enough power to come out the other side, so bounces around the brain shredding brain matter.

My grandfather was a Gamekeeper, so I was taught very early on to respect guns, and how to use them safely.

The man should be charged with manslaughter and have the kids taken into care. It may be 1 mistake, but my goodness its a biggy.

I couldn't agree more. When you have kids around you do everything in your power to protect them. This could have been easily prevented and therefore was not an 'accident'. Thoughtlessness and stupidity maybe.

Right, so we've got a potentially mentally handicapped child. Or, to use an euphemism, a child with special needs. Like, for example, extra support from its parents. Now, if you can get off your vindictive authoritarian horse for a minute, can you not see how while locking someone up in prison for several years makes for some great sadistic kicks, it doesn't really do a great deal for the child's wellbeing?

The man made a massive mistake. Will locking him up help right what he's done? No. So what's the point, besides that of revenge?

And I'm not knocking people brought up by single mothers on benefits. My point is that, which would anyone rather be brought up by - a single mother on benefits, or an affluent family?
