some string, 5 yoghurt pots and a bucket

I wouldn't personally recommend any that cost the "VERY LEAST possible", might as well not bother as you'll end up with the equivalent of bruffterman's yoghurt pot idea

I also recommend that you don't get the cheapest surround sound system. If you want to go for the cheapest then it would be better to just stick with your TV's speakers.

    Ah right. Ok guys

Are you looking for full 5.1 or would 2.1 do? Also what would you be using it for? AV/gaming? or just connected to PC for music?

What's the point in spending as little as possible? The whole point of a surround sound system is that it sounds good, right? A cheap £50 surround system isn't going to sound good. Yes, the surround sound effect will be good, but if everything sounds awful, what's the point?

Consider it this way: A decent surround sound system is something you're going to listen to for years. You're going to use it for all your music, all your games, all your movies, probably every day, for several years. Maybe ten years, which isn't at all an excessive estimate, given that a genuinely good system doesn't need upgrading and decent audio hardware lasts for much, much longer than that. Is £500 for something that's going to give you 10+ years of listening pleasure really that much? £50 a year? It's probably less than you'd spend on the leccy powering the thing.

Splash out. Treat yourself to something you can be proud of. Yes, it'll cost a lot more than you'd hoped to spend, but ten years down the line, you'll still have a kit that makes everything sound amazing. Isn't that worth saving for a few more weeks?
