Someone using my wireless network, should i be worried?

Over the last few nights mcafee has given me a warning of someone coming onto my network. I have checked all our things such as PS3 etc but none of them are this ip number which is a bit scarey so i have marked it on my computer as an intruder and it now lets me know each time it happens. So far its been about 4 times this week.
Mcafee does go on to say as long as i have mcafee running this will not be a problem but it has really worried me that someone might be finding out my passwords etc.
Can anyone tell me what i should do. There does not seem to be a quick button to disable it which seems the obvious thing to me.
Also if it is not a security problem could they still be downloading things etc and using up my allowance.
Thanks in advance.

Is your wireless password protected?

About time it was...............

Who ever is using it could be downloading movies, games etc illegally and as its from your broadband you'd be in trouble. As well as it using your allowance up.

Is there any security on your connection, WEPA etc or is it unsecured?

Oh i am looking an idiot now.
i am not sure if it has a password. When we log on to the laptops we just log on as user but i dont think that is what you mean.
Is there someway i can check. The only passwords we use on a daily basis are our user log in passwords.

you need to log on to your router and activate the password security

the passwords you use are only to log on to your laptop

once you password protect it, and enter your password when prompted, then it should remember it and you wont need to do it again

Look in the book that came with your router and set WPA security (not WEP).

If you have not got WEP or WPA security then ANYONE in your area can get "into" your router and access the internet.

It is possible to hack into WEP systems to get the password so you may want to change the password

someone could be using your connection for Child Porn

if its a netgear router type 192.168.0.1 in your address bar. then admin, and password or 1234 as the password

once in go to wireless settings and set up access list. Add the MAC number of each machine you want to allow to connect, then change the default password before you exit.

If the router was provided by your internet provider it may be written on the bottom of it. If not call them up and explain your concerns and they'll be able to talk you through making your connection more secure

it will start working again but if you have opened any ports for devices, or got devices specifically set up these will be removed and you will have to put them in again, plus you router will go back to the standard security settings so you can then put in new password etc to make sure no one uses your connection

Thanks i will try to remember my password and if not do what you have said. Appreciate you all taking your time to help.

I dont want to scare you but it is possible and I stress possible, that this unknown user has accessed your network and changed the password to stop you getting in and kicking him off. So I wouldn't leave it too long to sort it out in case he is using you for bad reasons.

there are 3 unsecure networks within my vicinity which are useable, some people

dcx_badass;7751441

Don't use WEP, I'd reset the router, and put WPA on.

QFT, WEP is easily crackable by somone who can follow a guide and watch a video on youtube.

Thanks its better to be safe than sorry. I am pretty sure its just me being a silly cow and forgetting my details but i am going to sort it out asap anyway.

I know people say WEP is easy to crack etc with like dictionary cracks etc,

when i originally got my home hub it was set up on wep but the password was the serial number on the router, surely that would be hard to crack and it was a series of letters numbers etc?

I thought it was the norm for a router to have some kinda of security like i had with the home hub, i guess not though if people have got these unsecured networks. If your someone thats not too savvy you probably wouldnt think twice about going into a routers setting to change stuff.

OK so whats the best thing to do to be secure? IE nobody else hacking into my router?

It doesn't matter, the common method monitors the network and ends up catching the key no matter what it is. So nothing brute force about it, the more the victim is using the connection, the more data that is monitored and the quicker the password will be caught.

avfc, easiest thing to do is use WPA2 (or WPA) if available. That's find for most home users. You can go further by hiding your network so it's not broadcasted or only allowing the mac addresses of your home computers to connect but it's overkill for most people.
