Something just ate my chicken

Something just came in my garden and whisked away one of my chickens. We have four, sorry three now, and she was one of the more fun ones 'cos she used to make lovely little trilling noises. She was a good looking girl too who looked like she was wearing mascara! The kids are completely and totally upset and we spent about an hour calling for her in the woods at the back end of our garden. No luck. All my fault because I got over-confident having not seen anything in the garden that would eat them for months now. Now the weather's getting colder I guess there's less other stuff to eat so foxes and the like come searching for easy prey. Well I've learned my lesson unfortunately and the other three will not be going out unless I'm there too. So sad, but also a fact of life I suppose.

:cry:so sorry thats awful xx

Sorry it was me, I can't afford to get my food in an conventional way due to the credit crunch

Did you buy any of the £2 Asda chickens? :whistling:

:w00t: It was probably a Harrier Hawk - These pesky varmints will take chickens. Get a gun, something like a Ack Ack gun would be best, because as sure as God made little apples he WILL come again.

My aunty used to keep chickens and they got eaten by foxes

How long can you keep a chicken in a freezer?

Just asking because I put one in last night and this morning it was dead! :w00t::p

Sorry to hear about your chicken.

I would love to keep chickens!

Pikey?

Sorry to hear of your loss!
We have 7 chickens, but lost one a few days ago due to some illness I believe!
To me, we have the chickens for their eggs, we haven't named them all - reason being 7 is too many to remember! lol As you had 4, Im sure they were all different to you individually....
What kind of chooks do you have? I have ex-batt...you could always get some of them.....

wen i was at home (ie before marriage and kids!) my parents had chickens. we kept them twice. both times the fox would come and take one a night! it doesnt happen stratight away...takes a while for fox to work it all out.

second time we also live in a big house in country ..so dad had a wire fence arounda and above them but fox would just dig underneath.... it ate the cockrel last.

same thing happened to a mum from school.

A Fox ate a mum from school................that's awful:?

Such is life.

There really is no distinction between pet and prey to a fox :?.

Would love to keep chooks the amount of eggs we go through is stupid. Unfortunatly we can't

Ah, you've all been so lovely and kind, even the ones with the jokes, they cheered me up! My lovely little girl was a hybrid run of the mill bird but she was MY bird and we all loved her. Having said that the kids have started talking about getting a replacement already! Kids huh! Yeah, was thinking about getting battery hens to save them from a terrible existence, maybe we'll do that if the kids can wait that long, they're talking about going out tomorrow morning!! Thanks so much for your thoughts and hugs and everything, it's nice to know there's someone out there with a kind thought for a traumatised chicken keeper!

I'd keep chickens but if my cat didn't get to them first my dog definitely would (after chasing the cat up a tree).
