Sony UK (Electronics division) announces scrappage scheme

    Taken from Ben Parfitt's article at MVCUK.com [ mcvuk.com/new…eme ] (Today at 11:26 am):

    Sony announces scrappage scheme

Money off new consumer electronics purchases for those willing to give up older tech

Consumers could get up to £150 the asking price of a new Sony HDTV thanks to a brand new scrappage scheme that has been announced by the tech giant and PlayStation platform holder.

The scheme begins tomorrow (April 29th) and will run until the last day of the World Cup Final on July 11th. Old tech handed in doesnt have to be Sony branded and will be accepted even if in a poor state of repair.

Participating retailers include Sony Centres, Tesco Extra, Comet, John Lewis and Currys.

The deals available include between £100-£150 off Bravia Cinematic TV sets, £50-£100 off Bravia Essential TVs and £30-£50 off Blu-ray players. There are also discounts available for digital cameras and home theatre systems.

We understand that consumers will undoubtedly want to upgrade their kit as they gear up for the World Cup this summer, but cost is still an issue for most of us coming out of recession, Sony UK commercial director Andy Benson stated.

This campaign is not only timely in helping people take their entertainment to the next level, it is also a good way to encourage the responsible disposal of old technology.

When asked by SCE UK about the possibility of a similar scheme being introduced for consoles, MCV was told this is a consumer electronics initiative and that SCEE has no plans to introduce a similar offer.

Sony have been doing this for … Sony have been doing this for ageshttp://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1207543/Now-scrappage-scheme-TV--150-set.html - Aug 2009

That was just TV sets, if I recall correctly.

The scheme has now been extended & "...Old tech handed in doesnt [sic] have to be Sony branded and will be accepted even if in a poor state of repair...".

My experience of Sony hardware must be different then.

I still have two working VCR units from the early 1990s, and every single item branded by Sony I have purchased since is still functioning. I cannot say that of any other single piece of equipment I own from any other manufacturer, with one exception: My 12 year old Toshiba (CRT) TV.

I'd sooner pay more & find I don't have to replace the equipment after a few years rather than try to save £100 on each subsequent purchase.

Anyway, I'm not here to suggest Sony UK is the best electronics manufacturer as I do not have enough experience of every single manufacturer to do so.

I just wanted to make you (all) aware the trade-in scheme has been extended to other equipment.

Use the information as you see fit. Hopefully my thread will help at least one member.

Sounds like a perfect scheme for you then if it falls within your 3-5 year window of opportunity.

I, however, am restricted by the law of income & outgoings so this is not a scheme I will be taking advantage of.

    Pity.

    Thanks for highlighting your comments.

The VCR I mentioned is VHS, so the reference to Betamax was not relevant, and I have not had the need to put any Sony batteries in anything other than my "Buzz! Quiz TV" Buzzers. They are still going strong.

The wording is "Its a dress-up price drop extended to others equipment … The wording is "Its a dress-up price drop extended to others equipment due to the success at fooling people"

Reading between what you typed I think you were inferring that Sony are attempting to hide their high(er) prices by allowing manufacturer's products other than their own to be traded-in.

If you believe Sony hardware is better quality &/or will last longer then I don't see a problem with that logic.

If you search around your house & find a TV that has not been working for years but you have never got around to disposing of, then part-exchanging it for a new Sony model makes perfect sense. You don't even have to own the old equipment. Just look around your neighbour's gardens; I'm sure one of them will have ditched a TV or Hi-Fi there waiting to go to the tip (if at all).

I was also a kid "many moons ago" & I have a different opinion based on the Sony products I have, & still do, own. It doesn't make me mistaken. It means my experience is not the same as your own.

Nothing to do with experience, Market forces dictate manufactures build … Nothing to do with experience, Market forces dictate manufactures build down to a price not up to a standard

Consumers still buy Bang & Olufsen products regardless of price, and Ferrari & Aston Martin vehicles regardless of build quality.

Do I sense you have a problem with Sony as an organisation or a past experience has left you bitter for life?
