Is it a Sound Card or is it onboard the Motherboard?

    i have no idea

I know this might sound daft but have you checked your mute . I had a similar problem, then realised my daughter had switched on the mute!!

    wheres the mute? lol

On my keyboard it`s on the top right hand corner :giggle:

Is the sound really distorted or something? That could just be down to the settings in the volume mixer.

No ones unplugged the speakers and plugged them into a wrong output have they?

ive checked all wires ect, tried another set which i know are working and ive tried the speakers on an mp3,and a laptop, its definately not the speakers

I have exact same problem. All wires in right oles. Have been through devices checklist and all checked ok.

Computer tower is quite old, just replaced hard drives etc, so sound card could be 10yrs old. Are they easy to replace?

Try going into control panel, then sound and audio, then sound playback volume and make sure mute is unchecked.

    yep done that - unchecked

yes all is fine in the control panel

if that hasnt worked it could possibly be the sound card, sorry cant help any further.:-(

If you go into Device Manager (Right Click 'My Computer', Choose 'Properties', Go to the 'Hardware' Tab and select 'Device Manager') you should see a 'Sound, Video & Game Controllers', click the '+' at the side of this and it will drop a list down...

Type what is there for me if you can

Have you tried reinstalling the audio drivers?...if you have the motherboard make and model you can go to the manufacturers website and download the latest drivers.

    the list:

    audio codecs
    legacy audio drivers
    legacy video capture device
    media control devices
NVIDIA(R) nFORCE (TM) audio codec interface
NVIDIA(R) nFORCE (TM) MCP audio processing unit (dolby (R) digital)
    standard game port
    video codecs

Thing is, they do not know whether it is a Sound Card or Onboard, so that would be a pointless task at the moment...

We need to verify whether it is Onboard or PCI etc

In that case, it is Onboard...

Before re-installing any drivers, can you remember when it last worked?

If so, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

Choose 'Restore to an Earlier Time' and choose a date where you know it was working.

This should roll back the drivers and hey presto.

If this does not work, then it is possible the chip as a problem.

    nooo luck boo hoo

thanks for the pointers tho guys, will leave feedback for you

You could try uninstalling the drivers for your sound card, restart the comp then Windows should detect new hardware and re-install them.
    Another solution maybe?? :?

thing is, i have no idea what im looking for/doing, im scared i'll do something wrong, looks like i'll have to get it seen to by a pro

Don't let them charge you through the back teeth and question everything they do (if you don't personally know them).

It may seem like you're being an annoyance, but a lot of people who realise customers don't know what is going on tend to stretch it out and raise the sum of money for labour costs when it could be something simple.

Actually, just thought, if it is an onboard it could have disabled itself in the BIOS.

When the machine first boots it will ask for either F2, F10 or Del to be pressed to enter setup.

If you do this, then check in all menus (possibly intergrated peripherals) for onboard AC97 Audio or similar and see if it is enabled or disabled.

If it is disabled, enable it and save & exit.

If it is enabled, could still be a chip issue.

i give up, tried the above, cannot see anything like that in any of the menu's, gonna get a friend to have a look for me thanks to you all

If you uninstall these, then restart PC, it will pick them up and re-install them itself when starting back up.
