South Lakes Safari Zoo Refused New Licence and Formal Closure Notice Issued - 500 Animal Deaths In 4 Years

Thought this was really shocking - 500 animal deaths in just 4 years seems like a massive amount.

South Lakes Safari Zoo owner David Gill in Cumbria has had its application for a new licence rejected. Almost 500 animals died in the last 4 years AND a keeper was killed by a Sumatran tiger in May 2013.

The application was refused by Barrow Borough Council's licensing regulatory committee and it seems the vote was unanimous.

Just Breaking .... a Formal Closure Notice has been Issued - it can remain open temporarily pending a review by David Gill its founder

Ok, so realistically some deaths are to be expected, but according to Sky News a lot of them are completely avoidable, and some just barbaric. For eg;

- Seven healthy lion cubs and five young baboons were "euthanised" because there was not enough space

- Mr Gill shot 18 Sacred Ibis birds after he was threatened with prosecution for letting them fly free

- Three animals died after being run over by a miniature railway train

Not sure what the future holds for South Lakes Safari Zoo, but it's pretty sad to hear about what has been happening.

An i thought Paignton Zoo was bad!

many zoos have a higher than natural average mortality rate

sheesh.. why wasn't it closed sooner

Other than for conservation no animal should belong in a zoo.

Good, glad its closing.

Wtf? oO

Cumbria Zoo has a separate licence application in to take over. It's only Mr Gills licence that has been rejected.

I hope they find homes for the remaining animals & not put them to sleep

Was going to visit it. I'll save the 2 hour journey

The owner is a lunatic, my wife used to work for him.

But to be fair to some examples given, getting rid of lions like that is fairly common and any zoo would have done the same, they're pride animals and you can't really have lions fighting each other.

The train one is because he sacked the train driver and clearly replaced him with a prat, they let a lot of animals run free.

It's a shame because back in the day it was quite a nice zoo

It's ironic. The animals in this zoo are more endangered than the one's in the wild.

Castle is a fantastic series. Give it a go. The only reason the show ended after so many seasons is that the lead actors had a long relationship in real life and then broke up and then they couldn't stand each other.
