Hot on the heels of my number one thread "Buddy/Ignore list" comes this thread to guide you to the proper way of using these buttons.

Please be aware of how you use these buttons, it is important.

Firstly, the Spam button.

The Spam button is basically a button that removes a thread from the forum. It is not deleted, only removed to a place where only the moderators and Admin can see it.

One member can not spam a thread by themselves, it takes at least two members with full ]voting power to remove a thread from the forum.

You should only spam a thread if you believe it to break HUKD's ]Code of conduct, or if it is a duplicate thread.
It is not to be used to remove threads that you happen not to agree with. There are times when threads can be spammed that do not fit either of these criteria, but best leave that to the professionals.

If you see a thread that you wish to be spammed, press the button. You can also write a post in the thread that you have spammed it, and also the reason why, but it is not mandatory. It is best to write it in the thread though because then this is a call for others to do the same, as it can't be removed with just your pressing of it.

Secondly, the "Expire" button.

The "Expire" button is for when a deal posted is no longer available. It will then preface a thread title with the words "Expired".

An "Expired" thread can not be "Spammed", so please ensure that you are making the correct decision when pressing the "Expire" button. This is especially important when abusive threads are made. It is then only when a moderator is made aware of the thread that it can be removed. I have seen some very ]unpleasant threads posted that have been mistakenly "Expired" that have remained for a long time because they have been "Expired" and not "Spammed".

When a thread is "Expired", you can post on it as normal. If the thread is in the "Deals" forum, you will no longer be able to vote on it.

These buttons have different uses across the forum.

This a general overview of these buttons. If you are unsure about whether to use them, the best thing to do is reporthttp://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh89/thesaint01/pics%20for%20forum/report.gif the post, and let a moderator make a decision.

Admin

Thanks Thesaint- it is frustrating when members expire threads which are duplicates etc- if you come across a thread which is a duplicate or offensive then it's best to spam then hit the report button too so we can remove it quickly

Im not sure why any threads in misc need to be expired really, other than to keep them from being spammed

Gee thanks, I don't think your moment of common sense will prevent you from still spamming threads in the future though.

Is it me or is this just slightly hypocritical?
Half your post count is due to the comments - Spammed!

.. it is frustrating when members expire threads which are duplicates ...

So, without threads like this, how are you supposed to know to click "Spam" for a duplicate thread? I can see why people would logically think to expire it...

Why don't you get admin to change it to "Spam / Report Duplicate" or something like that, as this thread will soon disappear off the page, and we'll all be none the wiser again... (that's if the majority of people even venture into the Misc area...)

I suppose there is a genuine use, like when someone posts a "Help" thread, and they get it resolved. They can write it in the thread, and it may be overlooked and someone else spends a lot of time searching for them only to post it and it was already solved.

I do agree that it does more harm than good in "Misc".

HUKD doesn't have "Stickies" anymore, it would be good if a mod re-wrote it and my previous banger(Buddy/Ignore), and added it to the side bar in the Forum Index. :santa:

Was going to suggest something like this, most members wouldn't know where to click for a duplicate, make the spam button a spam/duplicate button. Also why can a thread not be spammed when it's been expired, can we not change the system so we can still spam a thread if people have (maybe mistakenly) expired it?

I agree, allow expired threads to be spammed and maybe adjust the threshold on expired, making it so it takes at least two members to expire a thread.

At first, I thought that you were being rude, but I do see that you have made an interesting point.

On some forums, your post count is reduced by the amount of posts you have made in a thread that is removed.
I don't know if this is the case on HUKD or not.

If it is the case, my post count is not half made up of the words "Spammed".

If you are correct, then I have helped to remove approximately 3500 threads that should not be on the forums.

spammed threads your post count stays, if threads are removed i think your post count is affected

We expire threads, as mods, when we close them. Also, someone may want a thread expiring in the case where they have asked a question and it has been answered (and therefore you know you no longer need to open up that thread). Another example may be where there's a discussion about something such as the run-up to an exciting TV show or something, and it would make sense to expire this after the show has been on. Just a couple of examples.

No. On HUKD, when an entire thread is "spammed" it is merely hidden from view. It's only when we delete individual comments when the post count goes down. It's always been this way.

Having said that, I personally don't think that post count is a very good indicator of anything really and is a pretty pointless statistic to display on a forum...

sassie;2538529

We *can* delete a thread, which would affect post counts, but we rarely do this and usually just spam a thread in the same way you guys do.

With regards to expire/spam, our controls are exactly the same as yours except we can do it in one single click.

Hope that helps,
Duck

I was referring to members expiring threads not mods, although you have said your buttons are the same as ours. Also if it is not needed then maybe members could do the same as in other boards, report and ask for it to be locked. Again why cant an expired thread still be spammed, i dont know anything about things like this, but is there a reason it couldnt work

Ditto, its madness and really doesn't make any sense, a spam thread is still spam whether its been expired or not.

Like when I spammed the last chav thread knowing where it was going, it was put back and warned of people spamming. Next post was totally offensive and could have been avoided.

I admit the rare occasion I spam a thread and why.

Not for a mindless time passer thread though that is under Misc Nonsense.

ODB_69;2538982

What...cause they are done by certain people?

This is a ridiculous suggestion. Threads are spammed by mods based on the content, not who agrees/disagrees with the thread. We check "member-spammed" threads and restore them, should they have been spammed incorrectly. This is rare, and we do warn/infract those who do spam incorrectly with malicious intent.

Please don't accuse people of things. We cannot act upon "so and so does this all of the time". Please report each individual case.

Hope that helps,
Ducky

(I think I am correct in saying this, and not voting power).

I asked Emma this some time back and she said that it was full voting power (i.e. 9 ) that was the relevant factor.

I hacked into my 'user notes' and they said that I was really nice and helpful. lol

If the powers that be explain things properly, then there is no need for members to feel that they need to start threads such as this.

As shown in this thread, even the op is not enitirely clear on all aspects.

i think all the off topic post sshould be deleted.

i'm sure most of the "outsiders" who don't belong to a clique are getting more and more fed up of every 2nd thread turning into a bad episode of grange hill. (possible reason as to why saints rep is growing)

it was funny for the first 5 or so threads but now its getting beyond a joke and some people just need to remember that this is the internet and not take it so seriously.
