Be proactive. Go onto your local police authorities website to get their address and offer to take a course if available. I did for my missus, and she got one. She still thinks she's Lewis Hamilton though.

No, you have to tell them who is driving first then they can offer it to the relevant person, if the force and safety camera partnership support the system.

Also if you were doing more than 50% over the speed limit or have 2 current endorsements for excessive speed you wont be given this option anyway.

Where are you? I didn't wait to be offered, I just did it and it worked. She was doing 38 in a 30

She did have to admit to speeding (which she did in the letter)

I didnt get the option with Dorset police. First offence 47 in a 40. most miffed about that seeing several people since have been offered and taken them

does the awareness course mean you don't get points then?

I heard about it and I did the contacting not them. 3 points on her licence would have screwed her insurance.

No you don't, but it does cost more. Around £100ish if I remember correctly.

i live in warrington so its cheshire police, read on the speed awareness site that its 10% plus 6mph over is the limit.
Does everyone get offered? or is it up to them like

geegee-pinata - you don't get points but may cost ya more cash to do the course than the std fine

cheers for the advice everyone. hate it cos thinkin now what i have been doing since! but guess thats what i deserve!

I think this education thing is much better for everyone, one should not be afraid of speed (i.e. afraid of getting points, crashing etc), one should be learning to understand when it is safe to do so and when it is not. It will annoy much less people on the road and it will make one a better driver (minus the ego)

    Not condoning your speeding but..
Then 50mph should be the point they start the ball rolling, as by their figures 40 +10% = 44 + 6 = 50 you were 2mph under the trigger point, however unless you've got access to one of the celeb solicitors.
Also may be worth checking if the operators declared being trained etc in the use of, plenty of info available.

how do i go about checking that etc??

    Q. What speed limit do you enforce at?

We are working towards the guidelines set by the Association of Chief Police Officers, which is not to prosecute motorists unless they are recorded as going at 10% plus 2mph over the posted speed limit. In the case of a 30mph limit that would be 35mph. There is some flexibility in application of the limits to safeguard against possible discrepancies between speedometers and police equipment.

thanks but that's the maximum/minimum to be caught for speeding.
not questioning that i was speeding i accept i was. think the maximum for the course is speed limit plus 10%+6mph though

What is there to say that could possibly warrant a course?.

My mother got snapped and offered the option of doing a speed awareness course. I believe it has to be your first speeding offence, you don't get any points, but you still have to pay the £60 fine.
She said it was quite interesting, the people were nice enough. She got a free pen too, lol.

    Basically, yes.

It has made absolutely no difference whatsoever. Good idea in principle, but in practice I would say it was flawed. In fact the cynical side of me would say that these courses are a bit of a money spinner...

    forums.pepipoo.com/ind…=34

Scroll down for the table and information. Cheshire Police offer them up to 10% + 5, so 49.

Does not say what speed limits they offer these on though, some only offer them when caught in 30 zones.

They can't offer you a course or fixed penalty yet as they don't know who was driving, hence the NIP/S172 - once they have evidence of the driver they'll then probably offer a Speed Awareness course, a conditional offer of fixed penalty in this case. There's no guarantee of the course though as there's no set conditions, as mentioned above some forces only offer it for 30mph areas, there may be no free spaces and others not at all such as in Scotland.
