    SSD For Acer 8371

Hey guys. I bought the Acer 8371 (spec found here: http://www.it247.com/product/1/ACRSUD30/LX-TTK0Z-001-Acer-TravelMate-Timeline-8371-944G32-N-Core-2-Duo-SU9400-13-3-TFT.html) before christmas and am looking to upgrade it. I am hoping to install a second hard drive preferably an SSD, windows 7 professional (64 bit clean install) and upgrade the ram to 8gb.
Could anyone please recommend an SSD that would be appropriate for use with the Acer 8371, looking at around 30gb to 64gb.

    Thanks

SSDs use a SATA interface so unless your laptop can accomodate a 2nd drive internally (some Lenovo's do) you are not going to see benefits if you attach this externally (i.e. by putting it into a USB caddy)

I would recommend replacing the internal drive with the SSD using the SATA drive you have now externally instead.

Recommend OCZ Vertex 2E or Corsair Force (both use same controller but OCZ seems to come out top in benchmark tests)

the acer 8371 can accommodate a second hard drive internally, this one is suggested to fit but i was curious as to whether there are others? overclockers.co.uk/sho…-KS

would this not be compatible then? If not, why? sorry for sounding thick. ebuyer.com/pro…001

The 13.3" timeline series only takes one hard disk. 2.5" SATA drive. (note only 9.5mm hight drives fit, some large capacity drives are bigger) As far as I know all 2.5" SSD will fit.

i have the acer 8371 and it can take 2 hard drives. read this thread: (it is post 194) forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho…e=7

I was just asking on here to see if there were any cheap 2.5" inch drives that would be compatible with my laptop

As I said it can only take one 2.5" hard drive. Yes it does a spare sata connection. Yes you can just about fit an SSD by removing it from the casing (no warrenty). As the 30gb kingston SSD just fits your unlikely to get a bigger one at the moment as higher capacity drives are likely to have bigger PCB so won't fit.You may have some joy with newer drives that use smaller flash modules. Also many drives have the sata connector on the short edge so wont fit either like the newer kingston V100 series.

So my advice is look for a cheap one of the kingston ones that fits on ebay.

ok thank you for advice. will have a look around and give test some out. will let you know how i get on.

Another option is to replace your existing 320gb drive with a Seagate Momentus XT 500gb. This hybrid drive mixes a 7200rpm drive with a 4gb SSD. It then keeps your most used files on the SSD. If you do go for this make sure you use the most up to date firmware, currently SD24.

yeh i have looked into this. i have order a 64gb kingston ssd and will remove it from its enclosure and place it in the available port within the laptop. if it doesnt fit then i think i will go for the above drive as you suggested: ebuyer.com/pro…310. thanks for the advice

unfortunately not, Kingstons 64gb/128Gb are full size inside ..only the 30GB is micro

if you look for reviews there are normally pictures of the actual modules

why have 4gb when you can have 30gb SSD where you can fit the whole Win7 and much more

Well as I said my advice was to look for a second hand kingston off ebay. The other option was just that, an option, as he is looking to improve his disk access. The problem with him adding a SSD is no warranty with the SSD and having to strip his laptop down to fit it also loosing the warranty.

I see, well this is a ball ache. I will either try and send the 64gb drive back or sell it on ebay - i wasnt aware that they differed in actual size. I didnt pay a lot for it so shouldnt be too much of a problem to sell it on.
I dont really like the idea of voiding the warranty as I havent had the laptop long but would prefer more than 4gb of solid state memory. Would 4gb be enough to install windows 7 on?
    thanks

Unlikely, I installed it on my netbook's 8 GB SSD but had to wipe lots of things out to make it fit. I have no files there and only got about 1GB of free space with hibernation switched off.
