This is more of a heads up and a deal for everyone as I expect this to go as cold as carbonite, but the Star Wars films are coming to 4k Blu-Ray as a limited edition box set.

They will also be available on Disney + when the service is released and will also be in 4K.

Remember that Episodes 2 & 3 were shot on 1080p digital cameras, in some cases 1440x1080 then cropped to 1440x818. So charging £20 for a 4K upscale is a nice pay day for Disney.

Excellent news.

For 28 years every Star Wars fan was secretly thinking 'I know what would massively improve ROTJ, make the Ewoks blink, and while you're at it George, add in a nice long NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! at some point'. The addition of a spoken line from a Gungan (everyone's favourite Star Wars species) was just the icing on the cake.

You can’t forget Han standing on the tail of a Crime Lords Tail and not being shot instantly. Cinema magic right there.
A little on the expensive side for me but looks like a nice set. I enjoyed Episode 9 even though it didn't do well by critics.
I was a little boy when I watched Star Wars and loved it, as an adult the whole goddamn saga is terrible.. god knows how Star Wars got the following.. and the last 2 movies just destroyed my nostalgia for Star Wars..

"Rey I have to tell you something"... "what is it" its a subplot we forgot to finish!

Post-production editing fixed it.

They'll bring out an 8K upscaled boxset a few years later then a 16K one. Disney got to milk this cash cow dry.

This fake 4k fud really needs to die a death.

Bitrates are higher on UHD blu ray.
HDR isn’t on a 1080p blu ray (arguably the biggest difference)
A studio made upscale on UHD isn’t the same as you putting your 1080p blu ray on your 4K TV.
Colour range, accuracy and depth is improved with UHD blu ray

Now speaking of Star Wars specifically, these aren’t the same masters used on the 1080p blu rays. George Lucas tweaked these after making those and took full advantage of what the format brings to the table. Even on Disney+, there is noticeably more detail and the colours are far more accurate and faithful as to when they were shown in the cinema. If the difference is noticeable via streaming, it will be even more noticeable when they release on UHD.

Being shot in 4K doesn’t guarantee a good looking UHD disc. There are plenty of reference quality UHD discs out there that are sourced from 2K DCI masters. This obsession with resolution has been spread by gamers, people working in IT and smartphone hobbyists. It doesn’t apply to films in the same way it applies to those. Resolution is only one small part of what makes a good looking UHD disc. Disney (and the rest of the industry) are not just printing the same 1080p copies onto a 4K disc and calling it a day. If it was as simple as that, there wouldn’t be such staggered releases. It’s just another typical internet conspiracy that keeps getting parroted for no reason whatsoever thanks to that stupid real or fake website.

I didn’t say it wouldn’t look better than the Blu-ray. But a 1440x818 master is obviously going to contain less fine detail than a 4K film scan or digital master. Many cinema showings used a digital to film transfer which was awful. So whilst the new release will be the best we have given the source, it is hardly taking full advantage of the format.
