I'm thinking about starting a magazine and am wondering if anyone has had any experience of this and could give me some pointers such as would a printed or web based mag be best if printed what sort of paper etc.

Any help would be most appreciated

To start:
Hold the magazine in front of you.
Take the bottom right corner of the cover & move it to your left so that cover opens to reveal the first page inside.

Congratulations!

Seriously, what will be the magazine's focus or what content are you covering? This will probably dictate whether an electronic (digital) format is suitable or whether you are going for mass-market appeal & can expect to make printing on paper worthwhile.

Why do people go to bed and then wake up with all these weird and wonderful ideas?

I woke up and thought... BOGOF Whoppers! mmmm

Paper magazines are incredibly expensive to produce and without advertising you'd make a monumental loss. Start off web-based.

Why do I ever bother asking for serious advice on here god only knows.

The mag will be about slot cars and I'm hoping to get as many of the major manufacturers to advertise as possible in which ever format I finally decide on

You are getting serious advice

If you want unrealistic 'That's fantastic...........you'll be a millionaire' comments then you need somewhere else.

My qualified trade is in the print industry and there is virtually no money left in it all. Advertising is virtually a thing of the past and would barely cover your basic costs if anywhere near them at all.

The print industry is a no go area for independants now...........when the big companies struggle to even make money out of it then you know it's no longer a viable step forward.

As people have said...........web based is much better and costs pennies in comparrison.

A slot car is like a scalectrix car? How many of these do you expect to sell?

Can't believe that there is going to be a huge demand for these which only points to one thing... Failure.

So...

The online slot car magazine/site already has a lot of coverage:

Do you have a "unique selling point"?

a good layout with advertiser friendly format maybe?

I'm leaning towards the web based zine type mag just for cost effectiveness although there are a lot of slot car fans who prefer paper based mags

Is an advertiser friendly layout, friendly for the customers? You still need to make it appealing to customers not just advertisers

When you say a lot do you know roughly how many would be willing to purchase and at what price?

You would need to print thousands else the print costs would be too prohibitive and then you have to factor in distribution, stockists, returns and countless other things.

If you are adamant about doing it in print then the only way to do it would be in the form of a fanzine subscription which you would distribute from home and print yourself or if you could attract any advertisements then maybe your local print shop but it would only ever cover it's own costs at best unless you are really lucky.

I've put a poll on the UK biggest slot car site to gauge interest in both types.

I would print from home to start with as I realise printing costs would kill me any other way at first

So you mean you are starting a fanzine, good look anyway.
